Remap and insurance implications |
|
Had the D3 just over a year now and the warrenty has run out. Having read all the good things about bellautos remapping i was considering having it done but was wondering what the insurance implications are. Doe's it push the premiums up?

Depends on you insurer and also what your installer puts in the way of description on the remap. When we had the D3 TorqueTuned by 10forCash (site sponsor) NFU where told about it and that it's for improved MPG and better Low down torque for improved towing and that it doesn't affect the top speed. They made a record of it but didn't increase the premium. That said, they've found enough other reasons since then to up our premiums, so I doubt I'll stick with them at the next renewal.

Depends if it was done before you bought the car, and you genuinely didnt know it had been re-mapped
I have honestly, genuinely been there. I bought a car (from a main dealer) that had been chipped. Took it for a test drive, fell in love with it, and bought it there and then. Ran it for 2 years, and got bored, so decided to get it mapped, and turns out it had already been done...
I have no idea where I would have stood IF I had an accident, and the insurance company found out it had been done, as I had no idea. They had a reputation for being a quick car, even as standard...
In my experience however, especially in this day and age, where they will try everything to get out of paying, I would always declare any modification to them, then they cant weasel out of paying, if the worst does happen My D3 Build Thread

I can't think that most insurers wouldn't want more of your money. The great thing about the BAS map is that you can remove it and apply yourself in 5 mins. PAGODA

When asked during the quote. "does the car have any modifications or changes" I always reply. "not that I'm aware of". That way I always felt I had covered myself for a remap I could claim had occurred before I owned it

Remap, deCat and Allisport IC fitted and no increase in premium. My explanations were the same as Mr. H's and backed up by a letter from Allisport and a screen print from BAS website.

If you use the insurance comparisons site and state it then you'll have much less options. Because of that you're likely to pay more for having it.

In a court of law you would be told ignorance is no excuse and get prosecuted, so beware of adopting that stance.

I tell my insurers about any change as this provides peace of mind TBH ..when I had my first D3 TorqTuned by TFC I told the insurer that it did not increase the overall speed of the vehicle and the extra power was to assist power delivery eg when towing. ...they were cool and didn't even increase the premium. Make sure though that you get written confirmation of their acceptance 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
