Beware dealers snooping

Hi All

just incase anyone dosnt know this but Ive been told that the dealers are snooping on the car forums if your car is under warranty do not put your mods up on the site as if they track you down to a forum site they are invalidating waranties ie dont mention your cars been remapped or box tuned for instance
I only found this out through someone this has just happened to, I dont know the person personally but through a friend of a friend
cheers

Hmmm, seems a pretty strange thing for dealers to do as it would deny them warranty work, unless financially encouraged by those honouring the cost of the warranty. Chasing people down in cyberspace is fraught with danger for any 'investigation' and I am pretty sure the legal cost should everything 'go south' would rapidly erode any saving made by not honouring the warranty. It would not do their PR any good either!

Still, there are many good dealers out there trying to do well for their customers whilst keeping their business in the black. To the good ones I suggest they start reading their way into the legal side should they be asked to do this. Many places to start but a good one would be the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.

I understood it to be true that LR would ask for stats from dealer in event of warranty claim that including recorded measurements of torque through engine and gearbox - if these exceed 'normal' levels i.e remap then warranty work would be declined. I also understood that LR share the chassis number of vehicles known to have been remapped. Maybe wrong but came from reliable person.

Does anyone know of a warranty claim that was refused because of a non-visible modification such as a remap?

Lots of rumours but never seen an actual post from someone that said it has happened to them. On the other hand I do know of dealers who offered a remap when doing an initial PDI on a D3! Back in 2005/6 Turbochip used to do them for Stratstones in batches.

Another urban myth!

No need to be paranoid. I have been in the repair trade for over 40 years and have never come across a "real" case.
Incidentally in forty years I have also not seen a case where warranty work was rejected because of non-dealer servicing, providing the maintenance had been properly done and recorded.

Agreed, I doubt dealers have the time or inclination to do this. Given most can't even return phone calls I doubt they are trawling the web trying to match avatars to cars!

I would be wary of advertising anything you "forgot" to tell your insurers about on here though. I know some Loss Adjusters who keep an eye on forums for performance cars. No idea if anything has come of it, but if people put up pics of their souped up turbo nutter with NOS, a clued up LA won't take long to track it down if there a big claim to "adjust" and check the forum posts against the insurance proposal.

There was that thread with the bloke from the Defender forum having a set to with Harwoods who said they were monitoring his posts. I guess if there was a massive argument ongoing it probably wouldn't help.

Well done to both Gareth and TLO for putting this kind of urban myth to bed, or in the bin where it belongs.
Does anyone have some detailed case circumstances to support this beyond a relieable freind and can anyone tell me either my reg number or VIN number despite my posting up of modifying my own D3 beyond all recognition.

BTW TLO you are exempt from that challenge, as i expect doctor / patient type confidentiallity Rolling with laughter

Is someone telling me a tale then when they said the car records peak torque through the gearbox and thus if much greater than expected it's been 'adjusted'?? He said the gearbox (not sure which LR though) records and keeps such figures.

Interested to know if they are lying as I do't like repeating information thats false. Thumbs Up

Your car records loads of stuff you don't know about. It is graded and only certain people see certain information.

Your dealer sees a certain amount. If you have a big smash, the police can download more than the dealer, and then there is even more data hidden that only Land Rover themselves can access, and is how they keep track of long term faults etc across all the vehicles they make. It gets downloaded and sent to Solihull each time the car gets plugged in at a dealership, but the dealer can't access it.

Thus the scenario you mention is possible but I don't know exactly what's involved.

This is old now but gives a flavour

Basically every electronic device you own is recording data about you and either sharing it or is capable of sharing it, including your car, your iphone, your GPS etc etc etc. I don't understand it but I know people who are expert at interrogating almost any device and it is incredible what you learn about people from their gadgets. When you delete stuff you haven't really, and remember your iPhone is busy telling Apple what you are up to and where........ Shocked
