Well, it all depends on if you have a DPF fitted:
here is the latest specs from SSM50837:
WSS-M2C934-B specification engine oil used in DPF equipped vehicles 2.7 TDV6, 3.0 TDV6, 3.6 TDV8, 4.4 TDV8, Defender 2.2 Puma and Freelander 2.2 TD4
Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow C1 5W-30 is replaced by
Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5W-30
WSS-M2C913-B/C specification engine oil used in 4.2/4.4 AJV8 Gasoline and non DPF Diesel engines 2.7 TDV6, 3.0 TDV6, 3.6 TDV8, 4.4 TDV8, Defender 2.2 Puma and Freelander 2.2 TD4
Castrol SLX Professional Longtec A5 5W-30 is replaced by
Castrol EDGE Professional A5 5W-30
So Edge C1 5w30 C1 being the important bit for low ash oil. or oil reaching ford spec WSS-M2C934-B for DPF vehicles
Edge A5 5w30, or any oil oil reaching ford spec WSS-M2C913-B/C for non DPF vehicles.
It seems you can use the more expensive C1 oil in non DPF vehicles, but there would be no benefit.
If you are unsure if your vehicle is a DPF, look underneath at the centre exhaust silencer (DPF unit) & if it's got a sensor in front of & behind it, with extra pipework, its a DPF model. If just a normal box/pipe, then it's non DPF. There is a sensor on all models in the front exhaust pipes, so don't mistake that for DPF.
Or PM me your VIN & I can check.
I hope that has made things clearer.
Regards
Steve

SSM: Special service message.
Like a technical service bulletin, to inform dealers & repairers of issues, & to provide up to date information.

This is what I had last month, A new turbo fitted (free)to a 15000 mile 60 plated D4, but had to wait for Land Rover to fit it.

So while there is plenty of debate about the correct oil and availability, seized engines don't appear to be a common problem.
I'm not sure which oil the dealer used but if this was the issue then presumably they would have a few queuing up for new engines. Mine doesn't have a DPF, although I'm not sure this is relevant in this case anyway.
Just waiting for the dealer to get hold of an engine now. Biggest problem is I'm getting used to the toys in the HSE! Also have to say that Orkney Grey is growing on me. 2016 D4 Landmark - Waitomo/Ebony
2012 D4 HSE - Orkney/Almond - gone
2009 D4 XS - Buckingham/Ebony - gone

Engine siezed and looks like gearbox too |
|
Hi as I know the oil is 100% important there is a company in Germany named LiquiMoly 0W30 or 5W30
they are the best for the disco and look at the www is lots of extra care for the car too
I have a d3 tdv6 and I was not driving when the engine and gearbox seized at the same time (looks like )
I have taken the engine totally apart and is just the block and two screws from the crankshaft
but cant turn the gearbox can someone help please .
I did put the gear into N but there is no power in the car so jus on the auto gearbox under the selector plastic lifted the selector latch...
please help if you have an idea
thank you

Yes you can use DPF spec oil in NON DPF, there are no advantages to do this, DPF oil is low ash.
A little technical info here.
The problem with DPF's is they need from time to time to be cleaned out, this is done during the drive cycle, between 40-70 mph on D4's, the engine needs to be at full operating temperature, and driven for 20 mins, then to regenerate the DPF, the ecu injects diesel on the exhaust stroke, the unburnt diesel then goes out of the engine down the exhaust through the cat and DPF, bringing the DPF up to temperatures of 800 degrees C so all the particulates of soot get burnt off and extinguished, the max temp of the DPF is 1200 degrees, if it reaches this temp the ecu will alter it ways to allow it to cool down again.
Right, the reason we are seeing engines seize, is the fact that when the diesel is injected on the exhaust stroke, some of the diesel gets into the oil via escaping past the compression and oil control rings, and some through the breathers, over a period of time, the diesel content in the engine oil can be up to 10%, yes 10%, and as we know diesel may be a lubricant but it's also a good degreaser, causing oil to breakdown, which in turn causes engine damage, E,G, seizure.
My advice is to change your engine oil and filter at least twice between recommended intervals, this will not only help stop oil breakdown but will also keep our engines cleaner, meaning better performance and MPG.
sorry I've trawled on but being a mechanic, I'm very sympathetic about my engines.

I don't think it is just a DPF problem because my 2009 D4 didn't have a DPF and still suffered a seized engine. 2016 D4 Landmark - Waitomo/Ebony
2012 D4 HSE - Orkney/Almond - gone
2009 D4 XS - Buckingham/Ebony - gone

Is it not a bit OTT changing oil every four months or 5000 miles on a car that isn't really stressed or used to its max? Any slight saving in MPG will more than be outweighed by the cost of oil and filter. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Hc76.
Possibly not, but I would put money on it, that more regular oil changes would have prevented seizure, I tell all my customers, "prevention is better than cure"
Dave T.
If your doing the mileage, it's not so bad, as the DPF re-gen will complete, if it doesn't the re-gen will start next time the conditions are right, so this can happen a number of times more than normal, during the service interval, adding more diesel to the oil every time.
Like I said, I'm sympathetic about my engines, and to me oil is like my blood, I don't wish to poison, not to worried about the MPG personally, but some are, how ever, 5.9 litres of oil and a filter to me certainly is better than replacing the motor !!
