Cruise Control Stopped Working & How It Was Fixed
Coming back from the Lake District earlier this week and with no warning the CC just stopped working - no light on dash or any response - funny how you get used to driving with it.
So disconnected the battery after letting the car go to sleep. Airbag was next so out came the trusty metal coat hanger and surprised myself that I had the foresight last time I had the wheel off to mark the exact position on the shaft where the hook grabs the release springs.
Quick tug on either side the 'bag came free, disconnected the ground wire and the 2 plugs and removed the airbag with more care than a hand grenade. Removed the 16mm nut and remaining connection before exercising & resetting all the various connectors in the wheel.
Reversed the installation, taking care with the alignment of the clock-spring and witness marks (digital camera for the last bit) and re-torqued the bolt to 63Nm. Then set out on a test drive:
...and it all works!
I guess the car knew I didn't fancy going to Meadowhall to shop with my girls and needed to give me a job on an otherwise rainy day.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Until next time, I have completed this procedure as well, it usually behaves for a while then goes back to part time working, bit like my staff really!

I had a similar problem with the radio controls on mine a while back, the button functions got mixed up and some didn't work.
I did more or less the same - pulled the plugs to the control buttons beneath the airbag and wiggled the wires, put it back together and it's been fine since.
I've always been wary of IDC connections on small plugs, they've been a common source of problems on a lot of electronic stuff for years.Clive

Lots of people on the FFRR forum swear by keeping climate control on auto at all times to prevent humidity in the cabin. There are so many electrical gubbins in these cars that humidity/condensation could wreak untold havoc behind the scenes.....just a thought.

Makes sense. I know it uses a bit more fuel but I don't reckon it is significant on a hefty beast with the aerodynamics of a wardrobe Dec 04 TDV6 HSE in Tonga green with Alpaca interior.

As hotrocks predicted the cc has stopped working again.
Wondering what to try next but thinking of cleaning the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. Beyond that I could buy a new loom for the righthand switch cluster but I hate going down the speculative parts changing path without understanding the fault.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

The clock spring itself is the usual culprit, simply wears out.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I think a couple of people have got mixed up on this thread
CC = cruise control, not climate If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Robbie, my CC never worked from buying the car (second owner), the switch did nothing what-so-ever.
A trip to Wiggs' gaff and I was soon up and running again.
He whipped the airbag off and unplugged the little loom that went from the CC switch to the middle of the steering wheel. A quick fiddle revealed one of the wires had come adrift right at the plastic multi plug and left the metal pin inside the holder.
In my case the wire that had gone adrift was coloured brown and situated at the outer end of the central multiplug. I have no idea what this wire does but needless to say, if it is not correctly connected, the switch does SFA.
After seeing this wire come adrift, I would, if it happened again, immediately suspect the little steering wheel loom in particular where it connects to the little plastic multiplugs.
Mine wor for about half a dozen times on on one trip usually to London or back then will not work again simply pull into lay by turn engine off and back on hey presto works again

Mine cut out on the way home from the Czech Republic about 13 times. It was 30 plus degrees on the journey home. In colder temperatures it would work perfectly well. Took car to the dealers where they replaced the cruise control switches and I set off the next day for Slovenia. Worked perfectly all the way down when the temperature didn't go above mid twenties and then on the way back it was early 30's and it cut out four or five times on the way back. Got into Austria where it was colder and it worked perfectly all the way home again and has been fine ever since.
I'm wondering with mine whether or not the temperature is affecting it, but don't know where the control unit for the cruise control is located to see if it is overheating or not?

Still not got my cruise control fixed and a new clockspring is rather expensive. However, I was chatting to a bloke (car guru) regarding my cruise control woes and his instant thought was a dodgy brakelight switch.
He is an experienced chap so I don't doubt his words but forum wisdom usually suggest rather calamitous symptoms with either a switch or brake bulb problem.
Any thoughts out there for this being potential root of some of the cc issues the older D3s are experiencing?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Highly possible, brake light switch cancels cruise when pressed but I would have thought there would be an issue with the brake lights too, unless there are separate switches?2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Mine quit working but I pounded the switch with my balled fist of rage and presto it has worked ever since (almost 2 years now). True story and free as long as you don't break a knuckle.
I've got a working clockspring if you want to try it and either prove its at fault or eliminate
I've got the switches and loom as well if thats any goodPot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011
