Can't select reverse - Manual Box |
|
I am unable to select reverse either with the engine running or not! The gearstick will not go into position it just springs back into first.
Can anyone offer any suggestions or things to check before I give it to my local dealer to crack open the box and charge me a fortune?
Many thanks,
Nev. If it's not difficult, it's not worth doing!

Have a read of this from another D3 forum:
I have a Disco 3 manual 2.7 diesel 2005 its done 117,000 miles. Now i had the same problem my car would not go into reverse gear and prior to this, everytime i went into 3rd it went into 5th. I am a female (no comments please) and now a little about cars only because i work for Jaguar and LANDROVER myself. When this happened i panicked and thought the gear box had gone. My neighbour who too works at JLR and is very senior and he rebuilds his own cars as well as having very nice rang rovers on his drive (company car), kindly tried to get it into reverse for me but failed, he did say the gear box wasnt gone and it was a selection problem. I then got on the internet to see if anyone else had had this problem. Only 2 people i found, which one of them replaced their gearbox unnecessarily. then at work I went to the Discovery major rec on site, and the lads there called the ZF Getriebe rep (the supplier of the gear boxes) he told me that there was a common fault with this circlip and to look on the landrover club website. I found nothing. So i called him myself and he said there is a kit you can buy from the dealer for the ZF s6-53 for about £12 (quote 7c391B if you call) they have a diagram too that shows you what it is but they maynot have stock so call around. Now i have a very good and very cheap Landover specialist Mechanic( Forrest Land Rover - Keith Baker 01564 792 680 or 07976732134) he also did some invstigation as well as me......this is quite rare and is cheap and simple to fix if you know how and i decided to put my faith in my mechanic and not purchase the kit as he said the clip was only about a £1. I never write anything up but i wouldnt want anyone to waste their money on dealers or mechanics who have never came across thsi before nor the cost of replacing their gearbox (not saying the dealers are not good stratford dealer was very helpful) . In the end my mecahnic done the job, for those who can do this themselves he got the circlip from tool station and it was a 14ml alan key bung on the right hand side, if you need any help or ideally get him to do the job it cost me no more than £90. if this forum was usefull mail me please, ahopewel@jaguarlandrover.com, i am passoinate about the company i work for, and want to keep the great reputation going for Jaguar and Landrover
Hope that stops you getting a dry raping off your dealer! 2014 D4 XS

Many thanks James, I will pass this on to my independant mechanic.
I'll post how he gets on in a week or so. If it's not difficult, it's not worth doing!

discovery 3 reverse gear problem |

Thanks Rob. Your advice has been invaluable. When my D3 wouldn't engage reverse I looked in behind the driver's side wheel, saw the 14mm allan key hole on top of the bell housing / gear box. Then I dropped the guard directly underneath this, jacked up the front and took the driver's side wheel off, undid the 14mm cap screw, removed the detent spring, put a telescopic magnet in and removed the detent plunger and broken circlip in one go. Now it drives fine (if a bit soupy in reverse, first and second gears) because it's Sunday I am hoping to be able to source a suitable circlip tomorrow and the job should be done. ps sorry to phone at 9.30am on a Sunday - thanks for your patience!

A big +1 on this simple fix (even if I had it done by RCV). Sure beats the £thousands for a new gearbox. VIN: A175A328***

I have a similar issue which has just occured. My gearstick is floppy between 3/4 and 5/6, I can get reverse with difficulty and the indicator on the dash will not read reverse. It doe sound like this so I need to fix but does anyone have the part number or spec of the circlip in question?

This is an excellent post. The manual box on my D3 is just like the symptoms described above. Our old 300tdi had a horrible gear change & that too had a cheap fix. I was hoping that there would be a similar one for the D3, but hadn't managed to find it....until today.

What it doesn't tell you in that post is the original post which that is quoted from is years old and no longer topical.
If anybody manages to find a detent circlip without getting ripped off, please let me know coz i can't find one with the limited info we have despite searching just about every number I can.
It's the size that is unknown. Mods:
