Phantom fuel gauge

I've found the 'range' indication on my 57 disco 3 XS to be a work of fiction worthy of a Booker Prize. I had a quarter of a tank of diesel and 60 miles indicated. Bit of a drive through the lake district and it dropped to 30, which was ok due to gradients and use.

Anyway, heading on a steep ish downhill road I watched the range drop by a mile every second down to a range of 14 and the gauge needle was on the bottom. Definitely squeaky bum time as the nearest garage was 20 miles away. I was down to air con off and a feather foot but on the flat the needle crept up and range popped back up to 25 miles.

As a bit of advice, for what it's worth, when the fuel warning light comes on work on having 35 miles left, what ever the range.

I managed to get to a station and then get raped for a tank of Shell diesel. Bottom to top was £109!

but how low actually was it? I.e. how many litres did you get in? I usually get about 76 - 77 litres in at the point where I start to feel that its uncomfortably low.

When in south of France last year , we got to orange light and checked the range , 37 miles , and it kept going up and down , we then saw a fuel station sign saying next one is 37 miles ,
Now we had been driving a while , so sure enough 37 miles later , and well under the orange , in fact just below last White marker , we got there , I would say 45 miles , but I'm not going to push it again . Embarassed
