D3 / D4 suspension ride

Just had 06 TDV6 SE into the dealers for a service and a few other bits..... they loaned us a D4 HSE, probably hoping they would tempt us to upgrade.

Anyway there was little to tempt, the poor car had obviously been abused from day 1, and now with 35K on the clock was already beginning to feel tired, pulling harshly to the left even without braking.

Anyway the one thing that did impress was the greatly reduced roll / wallow as it went around corners, much firmer/taught ride.

How was this achieved? Different suspension control program? Stiffer roll bars? Can anyone tell me if this is possible to get on an 06 model, the old girl has loosened up and is close to maritime road going if it gets twisty.

Just interested. Cheers

BTW We know she should be exchanged for a mini for the now daily 14 mile commute and little else, but we just cant say goodbye so we are taking her to France this summer instead.

Perhaps, you should contact Graeme (perhaps GraemeS on this site). His wife suffers from back problems and he has gone to A LOT of trouble to install a D3 suspension in his D4.

Mainly stiffer roll bars and different shocks.
Trade off ride fror handling though.

I wonder if the OP's shocks are worn-out. Whilst my D4 now leans more on corners, it doesn't wallow at all with the new MY09 shocks and softer roll bars. It rides a lot better for my use as an excellent all-purpose vehicle and not wanting to drive a big sports car. The other difference with the D4 is the slightly revised suspension geometry where the roll centre was lowered which I suspect improves steering precision, perhaps providing less understeer. Being able to lower it by 20 mm for twisty sections encourages spirited driving too.

I recently replaced my rear air spring units complete with shocks to improve towing ride. The car has 96k on it and the difference was significant, even without towing. I used standard new items and did the job myself in 3 hours. Might be worth try as my maritime ride is much improved. I suspect i should do the fronts too to make the right near as new again

What was your reasoning for replacing the air springs too?
