'engine system fault' warning |

Hi guys, just returned from Devon with the caravan and experienced two probs with the Disco, both 'engine system faults' whilst towing. First one on the M5 and second one on the infamous Telegraph Hill. On both occasions I was able to pull over safely, switch off and restart, fault cleared from screen. I'v had this problem before and the dealers have never been able to bottom it out. I'm due to have the faut codes read next week. I've been told in the past that it could be turbo over boost, or a build up of soot etc behind the vanes of the turbo. Both EGR valves have been replaced, one about 8.000 miles ago and second about 500 miles ago. The Disco is 57 YM, XS model and has covered 39.000 miles. Can anyone shed any light on this matter, I would be very gratefull. Many thanks. JM.

without fault codes, difficult to say. but as you mention, could very well be the turbo (actuator, clogged vanes etc).
Other possibility would be fuel filter (seeing as you reference a hill). The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

As JF says, could be a load of things.
I'm hoping mine has finally been cured - though won't know for sure until I put the TinTent on the back and go up a hill.
Fault codes will help, but even then no guarantee!
Could be MAP sensor, Fuel filter, LP Pump, HP Pump or Pressure control valve, turbo vane linkage sticking, carbon build up. Mark.

i had same prob on telegraph hill code read was p2290-00 read from LR IDS
still havent sorted keeps happening intermitantly when put foot down to overtake ??? Survived the 2014 PotNoodle Challenge!

Oh the P2290 fault.
Number of causes of that one.
If the symptoms are that it faults when going up a hill on reasonable throttle, or overtaking so plenty of gas. Mine used to go at around 2000rpm - worse with caravan on the back. Also if you stamp on the throttle at low revs.
Top of the list is HP pump, but the easy one to try is fuel filter - make sure it's a genuine LR one.
Could also be LP pump, MAP sensor, leaking fuel line. Outside possible is turbo.
I'm hoping mine has been cured finally with a replacement fuel pressure control valve (Part of the HP pump I believe) and a return fuel line, which was found to be leaking after the above was changed. Mark.

One clue is does it do it from start up or after a longer drive?
I had just this issue on my VW T5 after a hours drive when under load it would drop into limp mode.
It was turbo vanes sticking, I stripped the internals and cleaned them, added very thin shims on the body and job done

Hi jm, scan this forum for articles on cleaning MAP sensors etc, there are pages of it. My power loss and engine system failure message was diagnosed roadside by Landrover Assist, and was a totally blocked MAP sensor.

P229000 Injector Control Pressure Too Low
Fuel pressure control valve (FPCV) maximum limit reached
Fuel injector control pressure too low
Fuel line leak
Fuel filter/system restriction
FPCV circuit fault
FPCV failure
Fuel pump module circuit short circuit to ground
Fuel pump module failure
Fuel injection pump failure
Check the fuel pressure. Check the fuel lines for leaks/damage. Check for a blocked/restricted fuel filter. Check the fuel pump module circuits. Refer to the electrical guides. Check the FPCV circuits. Check the fuel injection pump.

There are other threads on this. It has happened to me twice on long hills towing the van. both occasions turn off, then on re start all ok. Annoying but so infrequent as to not worry me too much. I would be intrigued to know the cause.

Once again Guys thanks very much for the advice, This problem usually happens after a few hours of towing, but last year it occured on the hill just after the second Severn Crossing, we had only been on the road for about 20 mins or so, on that occasion I called LR assist for help, the Tech said he thought it was a software prob which might require an update. On return from hols, dealers (Likes Land Rover) did a software update but still this problem persists. I have to say that it appears that Likes have done their best for me not only on this issue but other probs as well. It is anoying though. I might have a pop at the Map sensor in the meantime and see if things improve. On a lighter note I've just had a lovely pub lunch and intend to work it off by continuing my sons Defender 90 rebuild.
