Fitting 2-way radio to Disco III
Item is an Icom 208 VHF/UHF HAM rig with remote face ..... anybody fitted a 2-way radio to their Disco's that did not look like an afterthought. I have the LR roofrack on but any suggestions on cable route.
I am African so piccies are a great help ...... not that I am that slow of course 8)
The only decent RF cable route is at the top of the rear (boot / trunk) door, down the outside of the rubber seal, then over the seal at the bottom of the lower door and under the flap. This assumes that you are not doing the Aussie thing of an antenna on the front bumper
There is absolutely no snagging of the cable when the upper door is opened/closed, and any rain-water which runs down the cable will continue south before the cable enters the cabin seal below the bottom door.
I have fitted 3 mobile radios into the D3 and the other two have on-glass antenna's.
Pictures speak louder than words, so if I get a chance, I will nip out of the office with a camera.....
PS My IC-7000 remote head fits perfectly above the fridge in the cubby box
Take your pick from the 12v sockets in the rear. Don't try running high power from them though
I'm waiting for a successful dual battery set-up to become available

Here's a pic of my Yaesu FT-787 dash installation.
The main body of the radio is behind the drivers seat, in the recess that my commercial version has where the rear seats would be. (in my gallery)
The remote front panel is mounted on a new panel I made to replace the ash tray/cig lighter panel. But I still included the 12v socket under the radio.

Thanx for the piccies ........ does the ash tray fittings just unclip or is there a special trick?

Well, its a bit of hassle.
Remove the trip surrounding the radio, heater controls etc.
Remove all modules, hazard warning switch panel, radio and heater module (easy, just 2 or 4 screws on each module).
Remove coin tray.
The ashtray panel is still a to get out, because there are clips holding it in that face in different directions, its like it was assembled from the back.
What I did, was grab it and pull and pull and pull like hell! Eventually it came out! Obviously be careful cos the 12v and cig lighter sockets have cables plugged into them.
When I did it, just one clip actually broke, but it would still go back in if I wanted to.
Then I got a piece of 3" wide, approx 1/8" aluminium and made a new panel, and screwed it in.
