Cargo barrier and dog separator is what I have.
But to be honest, if it was warm enough to need to leave the tailgate open while the dog was in the car, I wouldn't leave my dog in the car. 2014 D4 XS

I would not even take the dog out in the car this weather unless essential.

Have you tried flicking the latch in so it thinks the tailgate upper is shut?
I just tried mine and it worked fine, you just need to get used to flicking the latch out while pushing the release.
I'm impressed the car disables the lower lock when the top hatch is shut.
