Harmonic weights?

Copied fomr yahoo's disco3owners group..

I've had a look at the D3 from the underside and noticed a huge
swinging weight hanging there. It looks like it would weigh up to 30
to 40 kilograms. What is this device for? I can imagine it's some
kind of harmonic dampener but does anyone know what it actually does?

Question is - what happens if you remove this weight?

there should be two, one either side of the spare wheel. AFAIK it reduces NVH from entering into the cab.
why do you want to remove them, it won't go much faster Wink

Your NVH levels will increase and....

your chassis will split down the middle due to increased vibrations-joking!

I reckon Land Rover have tried to nick the 'Mass Damper' principle from the Renault F1 team.
