Retrofit of TMC possible?

Have a TDV6 HSE, which in Holland is not fitted with Traffic Message (TMC) even though I have the Navigation in my car.
Do you know whether it is possible to retrofit this module to my car? The dealership thinks it is not, but perhaps it is already in the car and just needs to be unlocked by software??

Thanks

Dirk

Does TMC exist in the Netherlands? Sorry, no software tricks... if the module is factory installed, the TMC functions will appear. In North America, we don't use TMC broadly (yet, or ever)... so none of the Land Rovers here have a compatible module.

If you must have it, feel free to see if your local dealer would be willing to attempt doing an unsupported retrofit...

When you say you have "navigation", which version do you have? The TMC is only on the "premium" navigation (along with off-road nav., voice recognition, 4x4 info.). If you only have the standard navigation system, the premium system cannot be retro-fitted (requires a different wiring loom or something).

The TMC system is not very complex, and certainly should be retrofitable. I suspect that the cabling is probably in-situ - the TMC unit communicates with the computer via MOST. You'd need to buy, at a minimum, the TMC unit and the aerial amplifier unit that goes with it.

Once plugged in, the navigation system ought to recognise that the TMC unit is connected.

It does form a part of the "Premium" navigation system, but the parts are discreet.

Thinking about what Winger sais, I seem to remember being told that the dealers could "probably get the TMC working" on a basic nav system. It's the rest of the premium system that's the problem, if you don't have it.

Thanks a lot for all your replies.

I have a basic NAV system (no premium). My idea was that probably every LR3 has everything already fitted (TMC,special screen, voice control) and by means of some software codes you can unlock the extra functions.
If e.g. TMC is a hardware module that is actually not in there already, then it would have to be retrofitted and probably be costly.

asnybody any idea on what kind of TMC module I can buy to have it as a retrofit/prices? What is MOST?

Thanks

Dirk

Dirk,

The modules are Land Rover specific - there is only one. I sits on the RH side of the luggage compartment, mounted on the inside of the trim panel. Take off the RH cover and take a look. The aerial amplifier sits inside the top of the upper tailgate spoiler.

Other than that, you just plug it in.

MOST (an acronym for Media Oriented Systems Transport) is a networking standard intended for interconnecting multimedia components in cars. It differs from existing vehicle bus technologies in that it is intended to be carrier largely on an optical fiber bearer, and to provide a bus-based networking system at bit-rates far higher than available on previous vehicle-bus technologies. It is used in the Discovery as a network for a number of the electrical feature group components.

Winger,

Thanks.
You mean I can buy a TMC kit from LR and plug that in? No other TMC kits will work on the LR3?

Let's be clear - there is no "kit" as such.

You would need to determine, and LR should be able to confirm this, that TMC would work if you had all the bits.....then get what you need and fit it.

Don't blame the TMC technology... blame your TMC service provider. 8)

I can see this is an old thread, but just for info: I have the basic nav system but had the TMC module fitted by the dealer. Works like a charm! 8)

How difficult would it be to upgrade from basic to premium, e.g. the 4x4 info display? Is all the hardware already in the D3? Is the difference just in the sofware?

TMC is not very reliable, and tends to be out of date.

Sometimes however, it is spot on and an invaluable aid. Its all down to the single service provider (Classic FM) that we have, they are only as good as the info they have.
