Well, having had the front diff replaced on warranty I left the dealer delighted to find that the whining noise had disappeared so it seemed the right thing had been fixed. Few days later I pick up on a new noise 
This time it s a whirring noise, apparently from the vicinity of the gear stick (manual) and it is most noticeable when I take my foot off the gas and the car begins to slow down on the engine, although it can also be heard most of the time but not so pronounced. Dipping the clutch changes the note of the noise so I guess it must be gearbox or clutch??
Occasionally the noise either turns into or is joined by a soft squealing sound. SWMBO reckons it sound like a bird singing  and when it happens dipping the clutch makes it disappear. Seems to appear most at around 65mph.
Been to the Dealer and they agree something not right and it is booked in for them to have a look at it.
Any ideas?

what mileage is on the D3 ?
you can get a 'whining' noise (sounds a bit like a supercharger), possible cause for this is a tentioner or the alternator. Does it do it in gear only ? (if it does then it will not be either of the above)

Hi Targa, yes nerve wrecking if nobody answers... Strange enough I've heared a comparable set of noises. But I'm afraid it won't help you. For me it sounds like a nest of chattering baby-birds [chicks ? I'm not English..], but it seemed to come from the left-front footwell. I've heared it twice in a few months time, but cannot remember the conditions [braking, turning, revving whatever..]. To top it off : I've got an auto-box... But I do think it might have something to do met the valve blocks of the air-suspension? I've no idea where these are located, but whistling mostly is produced by moving air...

Thanks guys, your replies are appreciated.
Mileage is around 56k and the noise is only there when in gear so I am guessing it must be something to do with the transmission.
Interesting that Dan_NL has also heard a noise like a nest of 'chattering chicks'. This is a good description for the noise I have heard and I did initially think I had a poorly fitting door as the noise was similar to wind noise. However, dipping the clutch or accelerating seems to make it stop so maybe not air related..???

Targa, if you accelerate the airpump might increas pressure if it is't mechanicly driven. So if it is a resonance effect in the air-suspension, the change in pressure might brake the resonance cycle... Dipping the clutch also might change the pressure due to drive effects on the compressor..

I don't believe the airpump for the suspension is mechanical as its at the back of the car. If the 'chirping' hapens more when turning it sounds like a wheel bearing is on the way out, so jack it up and see if there is any play in it.
When my wheel bearings went they started very randomly 'chirping', then over a few months progressed into a nasty 'bag of marbles', especially as I went around a corner 
I also had a strange chirping that came from a tentioner on the cambelt. It progressed to a contant noise that scared the life out of me thinking that the engine was knackered.. turned out to be a 30 min job to replace by my local indi to replace the tentioner... from what you are both describing, I think this would be the most probable... but get it checked by someone how knows the D3 well, as they do have their quirks.

Thanks, never thought of wheel bearings, mainly because on other cars I have had a different sound when they are on their way out. Will give them a look though. I'll also have a look at the tensioner. Thanks for the suggestions.
