Re-programming D3 Speedometer

Does anyone know if a D3 speedo sourced from a breaker can be reprogrammed with the mileage accrued on the vehicle that it is going into. The application is for swap out of an KM/hr speedometer for a MPH speedometer. Will it plug and play or will it recognise the new vehicle as a foreign entity?

Awaiting input from more knowledgable correspondents, but I think the mileage data is recorded in more than one of the vehicles ECU's. I also seem to rememeber reading that replacing an instrument cluster is not a plug and play routine.

I'm going to risk a possibly stupid suggestion- on the basis that the speedometer needle rotates to the same position for 50mph & 80 kph, could you not just overlay a UK dial from the breakers on the Eire one?

(Prepared for a full discourse on type approval regs...)

The ipas's are not plug and play, and inface getting a used one will complicate thnigs even more depending on the tools used to fit it.

DrLex has an idea though witch may work, i have some old clocks at work ill take a peep tomorrow.

I have here a used MPH/KMH speedo and i think the plates will swap over from one to the other see pics.

Though ive not ever done it i also think that the MSV2 could fit the complete speedo if needed miles shown depending.
Though the face is far easer to change and would save getting involved in removing and reprogramming chips to correct the miles.

I recon to change the face you are looking at 20 mins max after you have the clock out of the car.






£60 with postage it is helps.

When you say the plates do you mean the black backround, will I need to peel this off and refit? Of will I be removing my circuitry and fitting it into the Mph facia. I do not recognise the vertical row of lights down either side of the temp/fuel gauge, is this for an auto? Will compatibilty here be an issue in that case. Is MSV2 a dianosis/ programming tool? I have put a picture of my speedo in the gallery.[/img]

I changed my clocks over from a lowline unit (Without info display) to highline unit, I had to change the info in the new clock unit with my faultmate including chassis number, the mileage could not be changed easily as you have to fit a new chip in the unit for the odometer reading and then get it set correctly. I have a mph clock here and just tried to pull off the needles without sucess, (didnt want to break it) maybe there is an easy way to get them off? The black background is a loose plastic film held in place by the front of the binacle. If the needles were removed it would come off very easily.

As said the background which you would be getting from the new set of clocks is just a thin plastic back ground and will lift off as its not glued after you remove the needles. Une the new backing in your existing clocks.

The needles come off if you gently hold them to their min postion so you know where they sit, then carry on twisting anti clockwise and pull at the same time, really easy.

Another 5 mins when i took these pictures today and i would have done the full job, the front of the clock just clips of in about 20 seconds the rest is a peice of pi..

The vertical row of lights down either side you speak about are covered by the trim seen in my first picture so this is not a problem. Very Happy

Also as said about the clock has a 35080 chip inside which is incremental so would need replacing if the miles were needed making less, the easest option is change the backing plate.
