Different length wheel nuts

On my D3, all four wheel nuts on the near side rear are slightly longer than all the nuts on the other wheels. They are long enough to stand slightly prowd of the allow wheel and therefore are difficult to tighten up properly.
I guess the longer nuts are for a 18" wheel, as they are too long for both the 19" and 17" alloys I have. Or maybe one person on the production line had a different batch.
I'll have to ask the dealer to get in a set of normal length bolts for me. Has anyone else noticed this with theirs?

Below is a photo which shows the length compared to the other nuts.

Lefthand one looks to wrong, mine are the same as the righthand one and are the right fit for 17", 18" & 19" LR rims

So are you saying that they bottom out before tightening?

Also, as the section from the flat washer to the outside of the nut is the same, how can they stand proud.

I know the L322 RR used different wheel nuts pre and post 2002 (same thread though - and the early ones were black).

Don't know why I've got four of these long ones then.
I've just spoken to the dealer and they are ordering in some more for me. My car now goes in tomorrow for it's enhancements too.

Just looking at the photo (haven't had my wheel nuts off) my guess is that they are made in at two pieces and the one on the left has been overtightened and the centre part with the internal thread has pulled through. I'd be very reluctant to drive on those on the left!

Yes, it is Hartwells. I phoned them today to ask them to order in some new wheel nuts for me (and I emailed this photo). Then asked if it needed the recent 'enhancements' which they replied yes. They then said they could do it tomorrow, if I didn't need a car. So I'm taking it in for the enhancements and a couple of other niggles (eg. dipped beam too low, juddering wipers).

Yes, the nuts are too deep so are proud inside - i.e. bottom out. This is why the top (end of thread) looks slightly rough cos they are being screwed against the hub.

I know what you're saying, but I don't think it is. They are simply a longer nut.

I've done the wheel in question up as tight as I can and it is tight enough - just. However, the ends of the nuts are getting chewed up.

Matt, this sounds bl**dy dodgy to me, i'd have a good look at your wheel and hub for any damage if poss before dealer gets to it, if the nuts have been bottomed out, and the wheel has been rattling about. If so,and things are damaged, get them to replace these as well as getting the right nuts. You are lucky this hasn't caused you a pile up, or worse!

Locking wheel nut failure

I have recently decided to change my 4 locking wheelnuts for normal nuts, after my friend overtightened(?) his locking nut and broke the wheel spanner key - then found that different D3's have different keys - so mine didn't fit on his locking nut. Fortunately we don't have many thieves in this area looking for 18'' rims!

note some of the origional locking keys were defective and need replacing your friends might be one of them and so its failure wasnt his fault. possible he could get it replaced free.
