MOT - Do I laugh or cry?

Whilst having its MOT today the main front to rear brake pipe failed. Everything was OK before but during the brake test -with greater force than I usually apply - the pipe ruptured.
Don't know whether to Laughing as just as well it happened there and not when I was driving, or Big Cry as yet more expense having had the front and rear timing belts renewed last month.
Needless to say it failed the MOT!

Looking on the bright side at least it failed whilst it was stationary.

Imagine if you were bombing along the motorway.

It may be wise to check all brake lines as there was some talk on this forum about brake lines becoming brittle and failing.

Hope you get it sorted.

Blimey, I'd say you were lucky, if it had gone in a real emergency stop scenario it could have been interesting to say the least!!

Brake lines going brittle on a 5 year old car Shocked

Is that usual - everything I've ever owned before has well been well over 5 years old and never had that?

Bit worrying.

Someone once said:

If it's not leaking oil - it must need topping up (but this was engine oil, not brake fluid I hope)

My Father's 3 year old Fiesta brake pipe lines failed in the same way and the car had low mileage. To make matters worse, he was on his way to my wedding at the time.

Oh, I forgot Landrover = Ford at the time. Whistle

Had the pipe been rubbing against something else?

Mine's just five years old and although they didn't burst on the MoT, it failed on corroded rear pipes this month. The tester is an old mate and he called me down to show me how bad they were as he was shocked at the state of them. They were fine last year but a real mess this - it nevers goes off road, had only done 8k miles in the year and lives in a good dry garage. Just looks like it may be a common problem due to poor choice of materials by LR or quality problems. No choice but to replace them.

Hi there. On my MOT, heavy corrosion was identified on exactly same brake pipe and had to be replaced (5 year old HSE).

This is obviously an area of weakness, gladly mine did not fail on the move.

Hope it gets sorted.

I've had mine for 5 years so given the potential ramifications I would like to check the state of my pipes! I'm still stunned that they could decay so badly within either a service or MoT interval.

Anyone got a picture to help me know what and where to look, or at least a description a luddite like me could follow?

I recall they are routed between the exhaust heatshield and the underside of the shell so are mostly hidden but they can be seen around the middle of the car (left to right) just in front of the rear axle - as they head out to the hubs. Putting the car on a ramp or stands makes it much easier to inspect.

I understand any corrosion on the pipes is a clear MOT fail as there is no guidance on acceptable limits of corrosion. Probably a good idea given Sipops experience.

I had an advisory at last Octobers MOT on the chassis brake pipes, not sure what this years will entail, expecting the worse. Oh yes, 2005 on a 55 plate.......................
