In My Fathers case it was corrosion. The pipes looked like someone had stuck a pin in them a lot of times, obviously when the oil pressure hit it something was going to give. Nothing had been rubbing on them, to me, it was faulty pipe from day one.

IT'S a common problem. If you search on here you will find many more instances of it
for some reason land rover use 5hite quality brake pipe that corrodes compared to the stuff you buy that's coated with zinc or somthing. Tight 4rses IMHO

Personally I'd have been far more upset if it had passed its MOT then a few days later the pipe had burst.
Brake pipes are our lifeline and the thought of having one let go is worrying (understatement of the year).
Was it a bad batch of material?
Or was it a penny pinching action by some over zealous accountant?
Or was it the vast quantities of salt that were spread onto the roads in some places?
Or was it a combination of all the above?Rob Smith

ummmm had my mot this week, 360k miles, 2005/55 just an advisory on the chips on the windscreen (not zone a I hasten to add). Brakes tested under road conditions and under tollerance (ie they shoved some weights in the back)
The D3's brake pipes cannot be made up on the spot from good old copper tubing, no, you have to order them specially from Land Rover as they have special fittings.
So this means more time without the car, more expense, and possibly exactly the same problem again in a few years time.
I can feel a letter of complaint to Land Rover coming on very soon.
Edit +++++ Evidently they can be made from copper tubing - see my later post!2005 D3 TDV6 HSE

Just discovered what I thought was a fuel leak from centre of the rear, turns out to be a leaking brake pipe. Just got it back from garage with a bill for £150.00 for the replacement of one pipe (apparently it is the hardest one to get to). Depressingly he did state that all the pipes are corroded and will need replacing soon, apparently they are made of steel and as there is no underseal they are open to the elements. Has anyone else had all pipes replaced? Can anyone give me an idea of cost?

I had all mine done in copper for £250 - the garage owner is a mate (but still has a good business to run). The materials can't be that dear as he said the rears were a b r to do and took a while so expect a fair bit of that was labour.
Front to rear brake lines corroded and excess play in rear bushes in OS and NS front lower control arms
Had an advisory from last years MOT re the brake lines but forgot all about them . Just glad reading the original post in this thread that one of the lines didn't burst on me.
Took the car in early yesterday to have the brake lines and front lower control arms replaced and it's still there Seems they're having to resort to a hacksaw to get the control arms off
They gave me a courtesy car late yesterday though so I could get home last night and back to work this morning.......
a SMART car
Driving home through a monsoon on the A66 yesterday afternoon I thought it would get washed away any minute. Had to keep well away from the 'river' flowing down the inside lane - the one I'd have had great fun driving through in the D3.
then driving to work in the gale this morning, it felt as though the bloody thing was going to tip over any minute
I WANT MY DISCO BACK Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Some greenlanes this weekend perhaps Club N.E.R.D.s
I cried - at the size of the 4 figure bill!
The official LR stealers way to do this is to take off the body and do them at the same time as the 105k service with the front and rear timing belts. Needless to say my independent LR garage declined to do this as they don't have the facilities for a body lift and as I had the timing belts done only last month by dropping the engine - need I say more!
I got them to replace the brake pipes with copper especially the main front to back ones but the flexi pipes need to be LR parts. The pipes are routed in the most awkward places making much of them invisible but still accessible to the rust worm.
The parts were cheap but the best part of two days labour did not come cheap.
If you are having your 105k service done get them to check the brake pipes or even renew them at the same time but do not use direct LR replacements as another few years down the road and they'll need doing again.
However, I dread to think what could have happened had the brake lines failed when I was driving and I will be saying as much to Land Rover very soon.2005 D3 TDV6 HSE

I like the picture! Anybody know what sort of car it is?
Clearly it is not a Smart (count the wheel bolts, far too much folded metal vs plastic panels on a Smart etc etc) although I guess it could be a Photoshop effort.
