what size wheels for winter tyres

Hi there

What size wheels should I be buying for our HSE as winter wheels?
The car runs on 19inch alloys currently, but am I better off buying some 17 or 18 inch wheels as winter wheels ie which size will give me most choice for winter tyres and are winter tyres substantially cheaper for any of the wheel sizes?

We are going to Austria in the car week after next so need to decide soon..........

2nd sets if wheels like hens teeth, as are winters.

Prob cheapest would be a set of 17" wheels, fair few sets on eBay, and tyres tend to be cheaper. Also have seem that narrower 17"ers (235 wide) are better than 18s & 19s (255). That's the route I'd go down but a case of beggars can't be choosers.

PS don't forget FFRR and 18s & 19s (06MY - 09MY) and RRS 17s & 18s (same as D3s) and 19s. If in doubt ask!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I went for 17" LR rims (almost brand new off eBay), with Vreds. Been brilliant so far in the very modest accumulations we've had.

Run 19" normally.

Thumbs Up Prob the cheapest option, Thumbs Up

PS Just looked in fleabay and only one set if 17s in my search!! Shocked Shocked

PPS b Censored r all on fleabay, an alternative would be fit winters to your present 19"s and shop around in the spring/summer or another set for your existing tyres. Gotta be more around then than now! Shocked

This one:

is from the same guy that I bought mine from. Didn't pay anything like that much though.... Whistle

The wheels I got from him were near-perfect.

I have a set of 4 x 17" wheels exactly the same as the picture above. They are in very good condition with no kerbing. Would sell for £120.

Nobody said it was going to be easy.

Yup. I'd have them if I had a wheel-hoarding fetish... Rolling with laughter

My D3 had the 18" wheels with 255 tyres, I had noticed driving the ones at work in the snow fitted with 17" wheels they handled the snow far better.
