Weights Behind Rear Bumper

Just aquired my 2007 D3 SE Auto and been getting familiar. Dropped the spare wheel and noticed two big swinging weights behind the back bumber at the rear of the two chassis members.

What are these for ?

I believe they are just balancing weights, to compensate for a design inaccuracy. Or so my colleagues working at Land Rover told me.

We help support their design software environment.

The balance weights don't seem to do too much though in jjvd21's video.

@ jjvd21 - Intrigued by some of the other vids though, showing suspension movement that shouldn't be there!

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

@LeighW: yes, I've taken many videos in attempt to solve the myriad of suspension problems with my D3 ("Black Lemon"). I have a very early build '05 and I've had nothing but problems. My dealer though nice isn't as knowledgeable as you folks across the pond, I've had to personally take videos to prove certain suspension parts are (were) worn. The engine (knock on wood) and transmission is about the only thing that hasn't acted up, aside from that it sounds like a bag of wrenches going down the motorway bumbling along. I look forward to the day I turn the Black Lemon in for a D4 or other LR. 'Thumbsup'

Nothing to do with the design ...but everything to do with neutralising the natural oscillations that occur during the vehicle motion. All cars have at least one mass damper ...some have up to ten Thumbs Up
