Tyre Dilema

Evening Chaps

I've spent a good few hours searching this section of the forum (Much to the annoyance of SWMBO) Laughing Eventhough there's a huge amount of really good info available I'm still confused! So I was wondering if I could benefit from your experiences.

The D3 is a second car which I share with my dad, he's a bit of a petrol head, very rarely goes off road and swears by Scorpion zeros, as many people on the forum seem to. He is very reluctant for us to fit a AT tyre, even the new General Tire one, due to longer braking distances poorer road holding- his opinion!! I tend to use the D3 for towing, particularly horse boxes and boats so feel I need something with a bit more offroad grip. We also live in a very hilly rural area, lots of Sheep ! so lanes can be very icey in the winter months.

We seem to have compromised agreeing to buy a spare set of wheels to fit for the winter months and if i'm using the D3 for any length of time. As a few posts suggest 17inch sets are readily available, as people upgrade to bigger wheels, but there seems to be a very limited range of tyres to fit them? What tyre would you reccomend for the 17inch set or is there another way?

You would NOT be making a bad choice to go with the General AT, it ticks most boxes.

Andy.

I use Goodyear MTRs in these conditions, maybe a bit too much of a change but have Pirelli ATRs for SWMBO's D3 and they have been supperb. The D3 is in offroad height so you can gauge the snow depth. And it stayed for months!! Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Hi Andy

Thanks for the reply, would stopping distances wet /dry be greater with the new General AT compared to the zeros?

Pirelli Scorpion ATR's are the best all-round tyre, run my D3 and FL2 on them all year round - Norway to Tunisia they're the best choice from experience, excellent wear rates too

Fraid 19s only but prob a bit extreme for day to day use if being close performance to roads is a requirement. 18"ers are also cheap on flea bay if tyres are shot, £50 - £60 for 4 not unknown, then you could fit ATRs or AT2s. Don't know about AT2s as never use them but use ATRs on SWMBO's D3 and she loves them, esp driving through deep (12") snow to get parked up. Also no increase in noise or fuel burn and do 40k miles. Down side is they are not the cheapest but advantages outweigh that for me. Mr. Green

PS As TFC sez!! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Just googled them DSL - they do look a bit extreme! Does anyone use the Scorpion Ice & Snow?? The tread pattern looks mid way between the zeros and ATrs.

I wouldn't say the ATR's are extreme - I have them on mine (18") and as DSL says, the road noise is no different. Didn't do bad in the Mud on Sunday. Not tried them in the Snow yet, but should be ok - particularly round here!

ATRs very good in the wet on road, aquaplaning, curves etc very nearly as good as the scorpion zeros, much better wear rate very good on gravel, not too bad on mud. Winter I use scorpion ice & snow winter tyre, brilliant on snow, even compacted / icy conditions.

How do the ice & snow tyres handle on dry roads? Would you say they are worse than an AT tyre?

Ice and snow Pirelli fine in the Winter but not a all year tyre def give an edge in the Winter but braking is compromised in warmer temps the clue is in the name

You really have the choice of Pirelli ATR or the General AT my money is spent on the ATR tried and tested in ALL TERRAINS, the new kid is the GT AT very good reports maybe rose tinted specs as it's very early at the mo but for the use you suggest these are the two tyres best suited to your needs, it may come down to what's available as well.Forget MTRs very rare at the mo so silly premiums will be asked by stockists.

One thing that is very clear this winter people have been thinking about their tyre choice Thumbs Up
