Sorry Angelfire I meant the MTRs were a bit extreme. Very smart truck though, much cleaner than mine!
Agreed a wee bit extreme:

MT/R's work well in deep snow but are poor in compact snow, winter tyres or chains best in compact white stuff.

Just to add my logic into the mix. My thoughts, other thoughts may differ and I respect that. Taking deep breath!
But we don't get compacted white snow roads like in Scandinavia. We get soft snow which is rutted until the council gets round to ploughing & gritting it. We then have the leftover from ploughing, rough ice that melts and refreezes and melts and refreezes before it gets ploughed again. Key difference between UK and Scandinavia, USofA and Canada etc is we cycle up & down through the freezing point so tend to do a lot of driving on frozen slush. The only time I remember driving on a white compacted snow road was when (it looks like) the grittier blade was a bit high and left a nice smooth white road.

Yes but you live in the sticks with no other cars around to pack it down,
Bit different down here where the civilised live, horses for courses as they say.
Nice picture though

At the mo about 2 junctions clockwise on the M25 from you, can't really say about down souff as haven't experienced the light dusting you have down here. Every time anyone down here talks about the bad winter I just roll my eyes and think "Don't get me started about winter ............".

How do the ice & snow tyres handle on dry roads? Would you say they are worse than an AT tyre?
Ice and snow Pirelli fine in the Winter but not a all year tyre def give an edge in the Winter but braking is compromised in warmer temps the clue is in the name
You really have the choice of Pirelli ATR or the General AT my money is spent on the ATR tried and tested in ALL TERRAINS, the new kid is the GT AT very good reports maybe rose tinted specs as it's very early at the mo but for the use you suggest these are the two tyres best suited to your needs, it may come down to what's available as well

OK, OK old pic and they are now in the dining room rather than kitchen, and they are on rims. They'll be on SWMBO's car permanently from next week so I can get her 17s. I love it when a plan comes together!!
