Removal of adjustable tow hook. |
|
I'm trying to remove my LR adjustable tow hook prior to going round Eastnor at the LRO show. It will not budge from the top mounting into where the lock & key part is. I can easily remove the bolts between the main towing bracket and the struts that attach to the chassis beside the exhaust, however I can not make the nut & bolt budge that connects the strut to the chassis. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be welcome before I go creditcard in hand back to the dealer.

Good thinking! Will try that. One problem is that I do not have a 18mm spanner or socket! I have every other size but 18mm so have to try with adjustable spannets. Will soak some WD40 in there & see what happens.

probably worth borrowing an 18 socket off someone...sray on some WD40... give in 30 mins and try.... extra leverage and even spread of pressure around the circumference will help shift it.
Did the dealer fit it? if so may be worth calling them to check theres no deliberate reason it wont ...i.e. locktite etc. 2004 TDV6 HSE Auto Zambezi Silver

Cheers Chris, might have to do that sometime. I've even been to the mega B&Q on the A48 to see if they sold sockets seperately, no chance. Letting the WD40 soak in now & will try a bit later.

Good thinking, I'm not admitting defeat yet but that is worth a try. If I can get the side struts off, I can say to the dealer that it should come away from the socket easily, please sort it while I drink your coffee!

Although your problem is resolved now Derek, I did notice that there were some weld spatter (in the receiver end) that would not allow the locking mechanism to be inserted to the correct position for locking.
I got a cold chisel and simply removed the small spheres of weld spatter and no problem since then.
I thought yours may have been pushed in firmly and towing action may have caused the spatter to 'fuse' the pieces together. Not actually, but gives that impression by being a very firm fit.
This info might help others though.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Mine hadn't been used for towing, it was just a good fit. Some super industrial strenth WD40 type spray fixed it and it virtually fell out. Getting the bolts out of the side was fun as they were well screwed in, plus getting them back in was tricky as things seemed to have moved around a bit.
