Should I Buy ?

Hi all,

I currently drive a Jaguar XF but have a hankering for something slightly more rugged without wantimng to give up all of the comfort and performance. I had a 2002 TD4 auto Freelander previously which was not entirely trouble free but not a nightmare in terms of reliability and the local dealer is on the way to work so big plus when it comes to servicing.

Anyway, I'm looking at the D4 XS or Toyota Landcruiser (LC4) but my wish list includes:

1. Xenons
2. DAB radio
3. power seats (memory preferred)
4. front and rear parking sensors and camera
5. keyless entry

Now when you add that lot up it's starting to get very expensive, so my question is really what is essential for real world driving ? Also, should I get the towing pack now even though I don't have any current towing requirement ?

Final, quite important question, what's the lead time ? A local dealer told me end December but I hear similar claims for the XF which didn't materialise until 2 months later. I don't mind restricted supply for a new model but I wish the dealers could be more honest !!

Thanks in adavance.

Bob.

I know for a fact that 3-5 are available, not sure what DAB is..sorry.

Xenon's are nice- but I'm not sure if the XS has them. An HSE would (along with all the other goodies). D4 for sure. Thumbs Up

Welcome to D3 as well!

I have the D4 XS and moved to this from a 530D Touring. The BMW was an excellent car, I liked it a great deal but I've absolutely no regrets moving to the D4.

Xenons are extra but go for them (the adaptive are even better)
DAB is standard and so is iPod interface
Power seats are not standard and I don't think you can upgrade these to memory - only on the HSE Sad But, in honesty, I don't find this an issue
Parking sensors (front / rear) are standard but spoil yourself and get the reversing camera too - its well worth the modest price and v useful in real world
keyless entry - additional extra and expensive, personally I'd not bother with this one, not essential for "real world driving"

Yes - it's expensive but not quite as crazy as the HSE

I bought the tow pack. I think its worth it if you ever think you may need it or want to mount a bike rack as its much much easier on the tow ball.

Blows the Landcruiser away for real world road based driving. Prob not much in it off road but the D4 will still be more comfortable!

My D4 was given a 12 week delivery and turned up about 2 weeks early. So was pretty good. But it was a long 10 weeks Smile

Had my XS for just over a month and still can't shake the grin. For real world driving it's simply the best car I've owned. I felt the XS had all the features I needed (with perhaps the exception of the xenons) and cant say I've missed anything. The phone and iPod integration in particular are really good. But most importantly, the car drives amazingly for a big diesel. Go for it Thumbs Up

You can get Xenons retro fitted by Pete Bell (site Sponsor in your neck of the woods) probably cheaper than the factory fit. DAB radio was standard on mine. Rear camera was extra (a couple of hundred quid I think) -sensors were part of some package that is automatically included in the deal. The seats are manual but as I'm the only one who drives my vehicle it is of no importance ( set 'em onc e and forget it). Keyless entry is a Factory fit option. Get the tow pack with the removable tow bar. Cheap as chips for the Factory fit option. Get a full size spare as Factory fit - also very cheap compared with an outright purchase after the event.

Can't comment on delivery times but D4's are in short supply on the second hand market so I guess that it'll be 12 weeks plus

Had mine 11 months - 11000 miles and apart from the initial computer upgrade and wheel alignment in the first week, I've not been near the dealer for repairs & etc. It's never missed a beat. (Kiss of death !)

I'm very pleased with it.

Adore my XS (I am actually in love with it!!) and there isnt really anything that I feel I am missing.

Mine took 4 1/2 months to rock up despite being told 3 max! Dealers tell you what you want to hear to get a sale!

It's fantastic. Mine's the 2.7 TD and there's a bit of lag when you first set off (only noticable if you're trying to pull out at a roundabout) but it is a nice smooth economical motor. Had mine for 2 years from new and average fuel consumption is about 34mpg over 12,000 miles - it does best when (ahem) pressing on a bit. Upside is a great drive and comfortable, people are very courteous (i.e. let me cut in to traffic often whereas it never happens to BMW drivers). Downsides are that the boot is big but not too practical (we couldn't get all the luggae in for 3 of us last year and had to fall back on the trusty Mazda 3 saloon) and it is seriously rubbish in frost or snow.... and sadly I live on a whopping great hill. And despite the JLR heritage, it only broke down once and that was for a recall/service item that I knew was looming but decided to try to press on until it's service a month later.

Want to buy it ?

Well, good news and bad news. The XF managed 39.8 mpg on a sprited drive back from the north east. A test drive in the D4 arranged weeks ago through a dealer in Doncaster fell through when they were suprised that I wanted to bring it 15 miles home to check it fitted in the garage !! Thanks to Guy Salmon in Sheffield, who just let me have one for 3 hours no questions asked, I'm now looking at placing an order but my missus loved it and wants a half share in driving it !! Anyone for a well maintained low mileage XF ?

That's a useful post colin, but I think you'll find that all Marques have a similar story to tell.

I don't think I could live without mine now..... Thumbs Up

I bought one 6 weeks ago after 20 years in German cars. It's early days yet obviously but I'd second this view; wish we'd bought it years ago. Great combo of capability, practicality and comfort.

Edit for typo.
