Front Wheel Bearing.

The D3 has failed it’s MOT today on a front Wheel bearing Sad
Nothing unusual I understand.

The MOT station/Garage have quoted me £63 in labour, and £189 for the parts, which seems very steep to me.

Having changed taper wheel bearings myself in the past, but not on the D3, I’m not sure if there is anything special I should know about before attempting it. I don’t have a press for example.

Is it a feasible DIY job for a competent DIY mechanic with a good selection of tools and a dry workshop to get the car in?
Does anyone have any images in their library or on a thread so I can have a look before I start?

Hopefully I’ll get a chance later to do a proper search on here, rather than the quick visits I sneak in whilst I’m at work

I think that is way over for the part.

try Nick (TheLargeOne) at LR Yeovil - if i recall i paid about £100 for a front wheel bearing last year.

£60 labour is about right, but its easy to do so you could save yourself another £60.

the bearing is all part of the hub so easy to replace Thumbs Up

remove wheel
remove caliper and pads
remove disc
remove hub
refit new hub, disc, caliper pads, wheel

no special tools needed

That makes sense, thanks.

I've just got home after collecting it, so will search for hubs not just bearings.

My problem is that I need to replace it over the weekend, so may end up paying a little more for one I can get hold of in time.

I can get delivered but next day Saturday delivery is a tad bit expensive

When I changed mine, it was a pig to get off, so you'll need a strong hub Puller, not one of the cheap shiny ones, but one with some proper strength.

But actually doing the job isn't that difficult, apart from getting the hub off, you can do it in an hour or so. Thumbs Up

I changed one a couple of months ago and found mine was quite easy to get off, once everything was undone a modest tap to the splined end of the drive shaft and a tap around the hub were all that was needed to "un-stick" the parts.

Mine was pretty well covered in crud (had the same issue both sides) there was a nice rung of rust around it which I'm assuming made it tougher to get off. Will hopefully be easier next time I have to do them! Laughing Thumbs Up

Thanks for the offer Nick, but with me needing it for saturday morning the next day delivery would have killed any saving I made.

Our local independant, West 4x4, didn't have any on the shelf so I ended up at Guy Salmon Portsmouth and paid full list price of £128. At least it's a genuine part and I know I've got it to start the job.

I've made sure I have a 32mm socket, and a length of scafold pole to slip over my breaker bar to loossen the nut, which I'm hoping to get to through the wheel centre hole whilst the car is still on the ground.

I've various pullers in the garage if I need them, and plenty of grease etc. But if it comes to it I can make a puller.

I've read somewhere that the main nut torque has been reduced from 370lb/ft to something much more sensible, but can't find it now, can somebody confirm what it is please.

You'll need a long socket then if your trying to get at it through the wheel centre..........

Yes, it reduced from 350Nm down to 230Nm
