17" All Terrain Tyres

I know this has probably been covered to death somewhere.

I'm swapping my 19" Wheels for 17" items just bought on the bay for Winter. Please can someone tell me what the correct size AT tyre is (265/65/17 I think) and will I have any problems with rubbing.

I used to use BFGs before on my D2 which were perfect for what I need but they don't seem to import that size. Anyone suggest a good alternative?

265/65x17 seems most popular for us in Surrey.

No problems with rubbing.

Andy.

The "correct" tyre size for 17" wheels is 235/70R17.

However, I would be prepared to take AJS' advice

Well this is why I threw the question out.

As I understand it, cars with 17" as standard have 265/70. However, mine had 255/55/19 as std and according to various convertors 265/70/17 is +5.2% whereas 265/65s are almost the same rolling diameter as mine.

What's going on? Either 255/55s are too small for the speedo, 265/70s are way too big or speedo settings are different for cars with different factory wheel sizes.

Yes, per Bushwanderer's post, I've got 235/70R17 111H; the tyre rolling radius calculator tells me that these are within a fraction of a percent of the size of my 19" scorps.

That's also the standard size as recommended in the Wiki.

as said correct size is 235/70 R17 giving a circumference of : 2390.12mm

245/70 R17 are as close a match to the original circumference as I could get - for offroad tyres

giving a circumference of 2434.1mm - a difference of 1.84%

I use cooper discoverer ST and STTs - some say the STs are no good in the wet and ice, but in my experience they have been excellant, from icy motorways to the frozen snow of the Crosiere Blanc and the fresh snow of Aviemore Thumbs Up

265/65s are 2.04% difference

have a look at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html - some really interesting stuff if you are into tyres Whistle

But AJS are the experts so I'm sure you'll get the right advice and price from them Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the info guys. Some useful bedtime reading!

I'm still confused though by the different wheel circumferences between stock 17" and stock 19" using this calculator;http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

235/70/17 = 2390.1 STD Road
265/70/17 = 2522.1 (+5.2%) ATR
265/65/17 = 2438.8 (+2%) ATR
255/55/19 = 2397.3 (+0.3%) STD Road

So from this I read;

1. STD road tyres for both rim sizes are roughly equal
2. If I want to move to ATR 265/65/17 is a closer match than 265/70/17 but that seems to contradict the info you guys have got.

I don't want to get too hung up about it but >5% difference seems quite a lot and will surely give speedo errors and more chance of rubbing?

245/70 from what I've heard works, no rubbing.

As for the speedo- with Jeeps the dealer can just reprogram them, so it might be the same with LR?

I have a friend with those on his Jeep. He seems to like them pretty well.

According to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp - Speedometer Difference: 2.027% too slow
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html says When your speedo reads 60mph you are actually travelling at 61.2mph
