Very interesting. Have all the failed wheels been LR OEM & (one of the) standard sizes? Are they a particular type or size of wheel?

I have a gut feeling that this problem might be more likely to occur with low profile tyres - could I be right?

At what mileage have the failures become apparent - presumably they are mileage related?

Affecting all wheels, but only the inside rim in all cases. All wheels are genuine LR standard size and fitment. Mine are 19" HSE rims, but I was running a set of genuine 18" for a while too, and it was happening with those too. I've seen quite a few like it now, and there are a few on here with the same problem. I don't believe it to be corrosion, the shape and pattern of the damage indicates definite wear, not corrosion. It is shiny and polished, and has a rippled shape like sand dunes. These rims have done approx 100k, and they will do another 15-20k approx until I change my tyres again, at which point I will have to scrap the rims, unless I see a bargain and change them early! Car has done 125k but I was running on the 18's for about 25k

Are the tyres rotating on the rim?

If they were, could they cause this damage?

Could this be caused by "straddling" sleeping policemen?

No. Tyres not rotating on rims. They are on tight. No leaks, slow deflation or any other issues. In fact the issue only became an issue when I saw the rims during a tyre change. Dunno about the straddling of speed humps, can't see it myself. I live in rural mid West Wales, and they don't really exist here.

I have heard it said that sand etc gets between the rim and the tyre and causes the wear. That is the most likely explanation, but why it only happens on the inside rim is a mystery. I suppose it is a possibility that the outside gets washed when the car does, and the inside edge never gets washed.

Whatever it is, it's clearly a design flaw, cos I've seen quite a few now.
