This sounds like it's the same as mine, except that I can get it in the lower gears too but it's very much dependent on load, it's only ever apparent on a very light load.

I still suspect that it's some sort of resonance within the exhaust system but like you, I'm resigned to the fact that it's probably a "feature" rather than a fault Rolling Eyes

Noises!!

Hi Guys, I have a 54 plate disco 3 auto and i to have been trying to sort this problem to, its exactly the same as you have described, i have chatted with dealers who have told me everything from waste gates, exhaust to bearings. So working for land rover experience at gaydon i decided to chat with the guys at vehicle operations next door on the engineering site and they too were a little stumped but also came back with the options of gearbox mounts braking and moving and exhaust rattle due to the noise at such small load. If it’s none of these then i guess its something to live with or buy a D4 Smile

However i will say, go outside put your car in off road hight and check your brackets, replaced one of mine and it reduced the noise by a fair amount.

Or fit double glazed glass Wink

Cheers

Hi guys,
Mine is 2004, and I think it makes that sound, too... At first, it was when cruising at about 80km/h, in 5th. gear, but now I can hear it at 100km/h and more, even in 6th. gear...
I suspected on diff's, gearbox, converter, ...
If it was a diff or the gearbox, the sound frecuence would change with the speed and it doesn't. Discarded (I hope)
You have changed the converter with no results. Discarded (...again...)
Heatshields? Gearbox mounts? HP pump? Maybe...

I hope that, for first time, it was a silly problem with a CHEAP solution!

Good luck!
David

Had the same symptoms on a customers car - spent a long time looking and have just solved the problem

Front propshaft CV joints had excessive play only visable when prop is removed.

Happy customer now driving home minus that noise.

Hi Chris,
Happy to read it!
Did you simply adjust something, or did you have to replace the cv joint (only one, two...)?
Thanks in advance,
David

When checking the front prop, there was slight movement when twisting the prop when still bolted on. When it was removed, both cv joints has movement and the gearbox end had a lot more twist movement.

The new prop had no movement in either end and on driving the car, noise was gone!!!!

Pro list price is £309 but I believe BEARMACH sell an after market one for about £200

an old thread I know, but did the OP fix the issue with the drive shaft?

Or does anyone recognise the noise in the video I've linked in my thread on a similar issue...

?

wasn't my drive shaft in the end. I am reliably informed that it is the injectors wearing and that this progressively gets worse the older the car is due to the injectors no longer being able to adjust for the greater wear. expensive £300 each cylinder plus labour. Was told not to worry about it until one fails as it wont damage the car. then think about getting the lot done. ouch

I had a rattle at certain speeds, turned out to be the clamp between the two parts of the exhaust was loose. No exhaust sound from the leak, but the rattle was annoying.

Dont know if my problem is identical, but seem to be sort of similar to some of your desciptions.

My resonance sound is audible, with very small vibration under load, especially uphill, in speeds around 70-80 km/h (around 50 mph) with rpm's between 1700-2000. This is where my car is closing in on a gearchange between 4 to 5 gear.

My local garage have tried to replace diffs, propshaft, parts of the exhaust with no success.

Another member had success with changing gearoil AND filter. To me this may seem logical due to flow of transmission oil on gear changes. Maybe old oil and a clogged filter causes this vibration/resonance?

Regards Eirik, RRS, MY 2007, 2,7TDV6

I have bought a new transmission pan with filter, and new oil.. Will try to change this myself during this summer, fingers crossed

Seems Discos have more rattles than a Nursery School.

I noticed my rattle after the 105k service when the belts were changed. Only happens under load and high'ish revs. To start with I wondered if the rear fuel pump cover not fitted properly. The noise is metallic ticking, like a badly adjusted tappet.

Local indi said it might be the turbo heat shield which he said he had seen a few times, but on investigation it was OK.

Reading this post it sounds like it could be an injector possibly, what does everyone think? And how do you know if it has failed?

Only reason for asking we are driving down to Spain again in a few weeks and could do without a breakdown.

On going rarttle

Have had a rattle on my 05 plate for some time and have searched time and time again for the reason.
Drives you bonkers " what the f.... is it "
Now having read these posts , tapped in Tinny Rattle in search , the answer is here Front propshaft along with the car moving forward a bit to take up slack when stopped and brake on.
So new prop ordered from Island 4x4 in Kent 11.40am 24th June , arrived 12.20pm 25th June
Happy days
disco 2 td5 [ don't ask long story none of it good ] now disco 3 05 se from a great chap [ tc /ebox slipping after 2 weeks fixed with new parts no problem ] there are some good guys out there.
