motorway speed with roof bars causes - limp mode?!?!?! |
|
Hi,
just fixed roof rails and roof bars to my D3, took for drive to make sure all was OK, however disconcertingly on motorway (at nearly 65) stability controls went, dashboard lit up like xmas tree and landy went into limp mode - not good when on motorway as had to veer into coned section.
reset and started again, same thing happened at 40 as soon as i put foot on brake
made it to services (thankfully only 500 yards) and removed roof bars - everything has returned to normal
as i'm about to buy a roof box, and due to go camping abroad on friday would appreciate any info regarding anticipated max speed i can drive at - dont fancy driving down to plymouth then on to france at a meagre 30mph!!!
many thanks

Does seem very strange. Can't see what would have changed to cause that to happen. Be interested to hear the outcome of this!

Had roof bars on for past 6 months and regularly travel at motorway speeds
Also had 2 kayaks on at over 60mph with no probs and have had a roof box in the past on our first disco 3 with no probs
As suggested above I would go see the dealer as something is defo wrong.
Good luck Previously those that have a special place in my heart

sounds like the roof bars are a coincidence to me
have you taken them off and see if it does the same thing ?
Also, check your brake light bulbs - change them for new ones they may look ok but filiments could be touching Duncan

Been running with roof bars permanently for last 5.5 years.
Covered 148k and mainly motorway stuff.
Also travelled with rack attached plus with kayak loaded.
Guess what ........ absolutely no issues experienced. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

As DD says - verify brake lights. Possibly also brake switch ? The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

I occaisionally travel at 90+ with the roof box on and faster with just the bars on, and never had a problem so far, (except when the boys in blue are around, lol).
LIke others have said, get it to a dealer and get it checked over. It my be something simple like the bulbs, etc. 56 plate Zermatt Silve

Could it be you're having to accelerate a little harder as the bars cause drag? Few here, myself included, have had this when under load, Air Mass Sensor and blocked fuel filters seem to be the usual cause, doesn't explain the braking episode though.
I had LRA out to mine, no fault codes even after I took it our and reproduced the fault, took dealer 2 visits to get to bottom of it so probably best to get it in ASAP, especially if under warranty Errr, ummm, maybe...oh bo**ocks, just do it !

thanks to all who have replied so far.
I took the landy in to Stratstone Nottingham this morning, within an hour they had diagnosed EGR valve failures - one was completely non-functional while the other was operating at about 75% efficiency.
Thinking about this, i do notice some drop in power when climbing, but I had attributed this to my bad driving(!)
Valves are being replaced tomorrow am at a cost of (owch) around £500 each. Procedure should take around 5 hours - does this sound about right?
(at least i wont miss the ferry, or break down on the way)

I would have just blanked them at a cost of about £40 for a set from Pete at bell Autos.

Ouch! Not done it myself but I'm pretty sure blanking them off would be the better option! Errr, ummm, maybe...oh bo**ocks, just do it !

Blanking depends on age of the car though doesn't it? I thought pre-07 (well actually EU3 rather than EU4) was ok but EU4 engines onwards require that the car's diagnostics notice EGR not working and put a warning light on all the time.... 2012 Defender 110 XS Utility 2.2

Chris...slightly off topic, but you must have litterally walked past my D3 at Nottingham Stratstone...mine was taken in this morning for a Service.
It might be worth talking to 10forcash...he's based in Derby. He was going to Service mine, but he couldn't book me in as soon as I needed. Might be worth sending him an email though.
Hope you get it sorted!
