Do you need special dealer tools to replace bushes ?

Just been told by a land rover "specialist" that special dealer tools are required to change the lower bushes on the front arms ?

...is this correct ??

thanks

There are specialist tools that LR provide. The rear bush on the front wishbone is oiled filled and has a wavy pattern in the rubber. Also the bushes need to be fit in the correct orientation.

If youre paying labour for someone to do it, then it's probably cheaper to just buy the new wishbone with the bushes already in Thumbs Up

i agree bodsy, but been told that special tools are needed to take off the wishbones to fit the bushes?

If i had realised before i bought the bushes then would have ordered a pair of arms but ....

so are special tools required to remove the arms ?

As far as I remember no special tools are needed to remove the arms but they can be a real sod, is it that they just dont fancy the job?

Special Tools aren't really needed to get the wishbones off of the car, but they are required for pressing them out and new ones back in. Thumbs Up

To remove refit the front lower arms, no special tools are needed (except 4 wheel aligner).

To press the bushes in & out, then special tools are required, (or specially made up mandrels the right size). the difficulty is the rear bush has a awkward shaped madrel to press it in. The mandrels to do the whole car (front rear, upper & lower & rear hubs are approx £2200+vat........I should know it hurt when I bought them! Big Cry

Regards
Steve

ah, but that's enough for doing all the bushes possible on the vehicle.

The front lower arms are cheapest to renew the complete arms, as usually a ball joint is needed & the labour outweighs the cost of arms, also similar applies to the upper front arms.

The rest, it works out cheaper renewing the bushes.....as long as you have the tools to do it quickly.

Cheers

Ah so for example, you could get hold of some rear arms and renew the bushes on an advance exchange basis perhaps....? Whistle Whistle

Not that I need mine doing, but I'm sure that there'll be a time.... Thumbs Up

I changed my front lower arm bushes without any specialist tools. A press (or in my case a hydraulic puller) is needed. I used some bits of metal for packing but admit to get the large bush in I had the rubber compressed a lot so the flat faced piece of metal was pressing on the bush walls - if that makes sense. It is do-able, but new arms are probably a better option, Also I had to make up a new bolt as 1 of the 4 bush bolts was seized.
