IIRC, the fuel pump in the tank uses the fuel to help it keep cool. If you regularly run near dry, you may shorten the life of the fuel pump.

Ahh, petrol roulette - ain't it grand. Doubt I'll ever beat getting 73 litres in my old Laguna (65 litre tank apparently!). Drove to Bristol and back with range showing as zero and light on. Mondeo ST not so happy - once cut out on a (very) gentle hill with 10 miles showing on range, which IS bad for the engine. Got away with it that time. Since then have to agree with earlier advice about not taking the risk - drove to Tesco (5p off) up 1 motorway junction last night with zero on gauge to find they had no diesel. Had to drive up a steep hill to nearby Shell garage (def squeeky bum time!) Embarassed
