Who manufacturers the oil Land Rover use

Hi all,

Just wondered if any of you guys out there would know who makes the oil for Land Rover and if so the spec, but any information would be great - for example I know Ford use Miller Oils.

cheers,

It is indeed a strange question.

The Engine Oil Cap here in AUS clearly says "Land Rover Recommends Castrol". Confused

I know
Its made in the Oil Mines in a remote region of the McCastrol Mountains. The locals strain the oil through their underpants many times until the correct grade is acquired. The oil is then transported to the port of BRAINS FOR HITS in special containers made from ant eaters and carried on the backs of runicson (a local breed of one horned cat). The oil is then placed into the correct bottles when it gets to the UK

Very interesting...
I contacted my local dealer to establish what oil they recommend and use. Remember in South Africa we have 2 variants, 1 the climate and dust & 2 the Diesel from some brands have a higher sulphur content, all in all making for more harsher conditions for the oil.

Although the cap says LR recommends Castrol 5W30, LR SA have explicitly (according to the dealer) told the local agencies to use Mobil 1 0W40 ONLY. This is synthetic based oil that eliminates the varnish effects too. I thought this was an interesting fact to add.

I think that Mobil now belongs to Castrol which in turn belongs to BP... Some concentrations has been taking place ! Wink

Australia 2005 Discovery 3 4.0 V6 Petrol S Auto Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

The recommendation for my V6 petrol is the same as the V6 diesel, and the Castrol synthetic available in Australia which meets the spec listed in the manual (have not got it here so can't be specific) is called TXT 5W30.

Coincidentally, this is the one recommende for 200 and 300TDi and TD5.

I have a couple of 1L bottles of LR 3W30 oil that I bought at the same time as my now sold D2 TD5. I think is usable in the TDV6 from the spec but would the oil have deteriorated after 6 years? I bought some Halfords semisynthetic 5W30 to keep ic case I need any but am too much of a Scotsman to throw out the old LR oil. Any thoughts on using this 6year old oil??

Wrong spy Shocked - Mobil belongs to Esso (hence the usual trading name of Exxon Mobil).

For myself, I would prefer to use Mobil 1 0w40 diesel oil than Castrol 5w30. The SAE rating mainly relates to the temperature range accross which your oil will retain its viscosity. Therefore, a 0w40 oil can only do better than a 5w30 oil whilst maintaining all the relevant properties of the later.

For those who don't know, my understanding is that the lower number is a marker for the point at which the oil turns to sludge (on a freezing cold morning) and the higher number is the point which the oil starts to act like water at high temperatures. This is an over-simplification of the (French) SAE system but it gives a bit of an insight. Furthermore, using a specific diesel oil rather than oil for a petrol car IS important as they contain extra detergents to keep the diesel oil cleaner for longer.

Im sure TFC will be along soon to explain in more technical detail........ Wink

DSL - Oil does go 'off' over time.......
