Timing belt N.E. recommendations..Or Locking pins hire
Evening all,
I am fast approaching the 105K belt change and would prefer to do the work myself. (don't like using garages for anything!). But a belt kit costs £100, plus another £100 for the locking pin kit. I hear some people have had the work done for just over £300 which, if available at that price locally is not worth me getting the old latex fingers out.
So the question is 2 part really:
A) Can anyone suggest a cheap and more importantly reputable indy in yorkshire, or
B) Anyone want to loan out their locking pins / sell a used set?
Thanks in advance, Iain

Check ebay for 'Jaguar/landrover TDV6 engine timing tool'
There's one listed for £59 to purchase, but you can hire for £12 for 7 days, or £18 for 14 days
So that would just under £80 for DIY - I know that's the route I'm taking as my local dealer has quoted almost £900 Never get mad - get even !!

I don't know why but my original search on Egay didn't bring up that kit. £12 hire certainly brings the price down, but the belt you referred to at £64 is only the front belt, rear is another £36.

There have been a number of recommendations to replace the tensioner pulleys at the same time.

The rear belt is not engine timing critical, it drives the HP fuel pump, so if the worst happens the engine would cut out due to lack of fuel
It wouldn't trash the engine in the way a failed timing belt could (would) so you could do the front one first for some peace of mind Never get mad - get even !!

Played with the idea doing the change myself as well but its not really worth while. Beside a locking pin set you also need a spanner set for the viscous fan at 30 - 40 pounds. An experienced indy will do the job on 4 hours (3 belts + pulleys) for about 200 pounds. For 150 pounds its not worth the trouble in doing it yourself...imho.CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Viscous spanner set (35mm) on flea bay for £19.95 so i reckon I can DIY for approx £120 all in
but personally irrespective of the cost, I will DIY for 2 main reasons:-
1, I will know how it's been done, and that everything is put back clean and just so !! (I'm finicky when it comes to my D3) having had some not so god experiences of so called professionals
2, I will actually enjoy doing it (I hope) 8)
but before anyone shouts, I know there are a lot of reputable good dealers and indys out there, so you make your choice and either DIY or get someone else to do it Never get mad - get even !!

The tensioner comes as part of the kit for both the timing belt and the fuel pump belt. It's the timing belt idler pulleys (x2) that are also changed for peace of mind and they cost about £15 each.
After looking at the guidance for the timing belt job (removal of starter motor etc), plus the horrible job that is the rear belt, I decided that for what amounted to about 150 quid in labour costs it was definitely worth paying someone else to do it, and do something more fun for the day myself (like go to the pub!). Plus, if the garage breaks something they sort it - if you break something you've got a dead car on the drive and an even bidder bill to get it sorted. Been there, never again Previously:

Hi Steve, Be gr8 to hear how you get on. Pickies, pickies, and more pickies if you can. Changed a cam belt on a Mondeo once, (plenty of pickies if anyone needs them), bit heart in mouth when she spun up for the first time though! Saved me quite a bit, and I knew it had been changed, is it me, or am I not alone when expecting garages not to do what you ask of them?
