Propshaft Joint

I have grease leaking from the plastic boot at the flange of the propshaft as it leaves the rear of the transfer box. The ‘boot’ appears to have a circlip that would indicate it can be removed.

However I have been informed by LRA that in order to get this boot you have to buy the whole propshaft at a cost of some AUD 950!

What do other people do with this issue? I cannot believe the joint in question is not serviceable

any thoughts on a fix most appreciated
Thanks
Angus

it's a kind of a floating joint affair, so if it locks together, you would get very severe vibration through the whole drivetrain and I'm not sure what damage could result. Or it may just snap at that join & result in no drive.

The CV joints allow for movement of the drive shaft caused by small movements in the transmission and transfer box mountings.

The rear shaft assembly comprises a Hookes type universal joint at the rear (rear differential end).
The universal joint is welded to the rear shaft tube and is secured to the input shaft of the rear differential with four
flanged nuts. The opposite end of the rear shaft tube is welded directly to the CV joint body.

So it's a CV type joint. If it goes (based on what happens with your wheels CV joint) then you'll get loss of drive.

Are yoiu able to see the split? Can you superglue it if yoiu fully clean the grease off the outside?

after first clean up couldn't see the split but will get the car on a hoist and have a good look
so you think some sort of adhesive may work Smile
interesting idea
thanks

It's the 'traditional' Whistle way of fixing small splits and got to be worth saving $900. I can see a line of grease that has spilt out, but hopefully there is still plenty in there.

absolutely better than $950
didn't seem much grease on clean up, so reckon there is enough left
one of the reasons for having land rover over the years was that almost every part was serciceable and that is why many are still running. How times are a changing

the other thing you might consider is a CV joint repair kit, which is basically an over boot, which goes over the split boot and glues together. I've never seen one for LR, but have seen them for CV joints on FWD cars, so you might find one that fits and does the job. Have a search on fleebay.

Al, the shape of that particular CV joint, won't take the typical split CV repair kit that you'd find on e-blag etc http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LANDROVER-DISCOVERY-...3a5bee5ba2
Thumbs Up

I wouldn't worry if its not split. By design they will lose a small amount of grease in this way.

I have picked up this exact problem, how to you repair the gaiter or boot.
Will super glue work , mine seems to have lost a small amount of grease.
