Help - My Disco is overheating! |
|
Noticed the fan noise first (had been stuck in traffic with air con on etc) but temp gauge showed normal. Drove for the next 15 miles with the fan noise becoming more and more noisy. The the temp needle then suddenly went from normal to full scale hot with associated flashing red light...eeek.
Turned off everything, turned the fan to max hot and opened the windows. Limped the last mile or so home...
Before I call the AA is there anything worth checking first?
(There are no obvious leaks and I still have coolant - supposed to be visiting a new school for my daughter this evening so this event has not gone down well...)

Are you sure you've got coolant?
You've not just looked and seen the pink coloured resevoir.
or
maybe the thermostat is stuck ? ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Did wonder about the thermostat but there is coolant in the bottle.
The car has been parked for 3 hours and I have just started it - the temp gauge went into the red after less than a minute so I guess the thermostat is favorite (although the engine was still warm given the high temps today).

Poss temp sensor shorting to earth if gauge going to red that quick from a 3hr standing period and no coolant loss.

This may seem a daft question - but is the engine actually hot?
And if so, how hot is it? What does it smell like? How hot are top and bottom hoses? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

After 3 hours the top hose was still warm and the bottom hose was cool. When the light first came on the engine was hot but not excessively - no hot oily smell, no bubbling coolant and no sickening blast of heat when I opened the bonnet.

It looks like fortunately the engine is behaving normally and the fault is in the instrumentation. Sender, wiring, connector? Have you looked at the fault codes yet? Just got back from the dealers... gulp.
Coolant thermostat has gone and just to rub salt into the wounds the suspension compressor failed as I arrived at the dealer. Apparently it needs fixing with a new one.
Oh and the EGRs are 'very noisy' too!
Now awaiting parts and it's going to be expensive.
