Is my D4 3.0 diesel a smoker? And will it quit?

Some more advice – if I may please!

My D4 3.0 litre diesel is a Jan 2010 model and has just clocked up 5k miles. However, I’ve noticed since I got it (ex demo at 1,500 miles) that occasionally, on harder acceleration (not foot flat on the floor stuff – just quick sprints, like pulling out at a junction) that it puts out a puff of smoke from the exhaust.

It’s clearly visible in the rear view mirror – not really thick smoke, but enough to be clearly noticeable and to catch my attention despite the tinted glass.

Is this normal – the car is running beautifully and no other tell-tale signs of anything being wrong. Oil level is bang on the money. No error lights showing at all. Thumbs Up

But I am not a mechanic, and do not really understand engines beyond checking oil, coolant and diesel levels.

My 335d BMW never smoked in its 50k / 3 year life with me – but granted, the D4 is a slightly different proposition! Wink

Should it go back to the dealer, or do other people get this?

All advice hugely appreciated.

blue means oil is burning. oil can only get into exhaust system if seals/rings etc are letting it by. Bad news, but you should notice oil consumption is up.

black, especially on hard acceleration, normally means particles that have built up on gentle runs are being blown out because of the increased pressure. A normal feature of diesel engines, and one that DPF is designed to reduce - not necessarily a good idea but that is another debate.

If you are not sure of the colour, esp with tints, get someone else to drive it and you follow. Either talk to them on hands free, or make arrangement for when they are going to wellie it and look for colour. Grey doesn't ahppen, it is either blue or black, honest. Thumbs Up

Have you had the update done by the dealer? Could be the turbo solenoid, they should replace the turbo.

Could the first 1500 as a demo affected it?
When I drove a demo D4 the dealer was pleading with me to boot it so I could tell the difference against my D3 (not blindingly obvious)
Have ran my D4 in like I was driving Miss Daisy (queue debate on running in vs. nailing).
Took D3 up to 96K , only noticed smoke when really booting, at night and seeing smoke in car headlights behind.
Anyway – at least you have warranty
Thumbs Up

Have wondered about the ex-demo bit, but as its under warranty am sure things will be sorted - will let you know what the dealer says when I call. Thanks to stick, caverD3, Russell and adam for advice so far.

Harwoods Croydon very good - offered to take car straight away and could loan me a Clio - or a Freelander from July 5th. instead called LR Assist who came out within the hour and advised me that 'Disco's do smoke and its normal'! He said I could drive it to Harwoods for investigation and they would organise a loan vehicle from Enterprise rent a car. They have given me a Jaguar XF until fixed. Were out of Freelanders but offered to swap for one later in the day if I wanted - apparently they have to give LR owners a Jag or LR or they get penalised...

Harwoods promised to look at it today and investigate - with a view to returning the car tomorrow or Friday.

Will let you know the outcome.

Dealer called - car ready - no fault found. They've had it in the workshop, a technician drove it home and it was fine - plus they cant find any evidence of oil getting where it shouldnt. Apparently LR's have big engines, and they may sometimes smoke.

I have no complaints about the speed in which the dealer looked at it, the quality of the loan car or the speed in which LR Assistance came out. BUT - as soon as I pulled away from the dealership and onto the main road, loads of smoke came out - really noticeably.

Am sorry - but this can't be right. I might try and find a way of filming it and post a link up for some opinions over the weekend.

It may be a big diesel engine - but so are the Euro 4 diesel engines on modern 44 tonne trucks, and they dont smoke like this... Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I would also agree, there was a post from an Australian forum member who had the same issue, LR Aus changed both turbos and problem gone away, one turbo was full of oil. Will try to find the post. Still waiting for a responce from LR

Thanks Russell. Interesting. Well I just treated mine to a full tank of BP Ultimate Diesel to see if that helps to clean things through...!

Let me know how you get on too - am gonna look into recording something on my camera and uploading in the next week. Just gotta find the tech to do it...

Does yours fit the same description as the one in Aus, mine does. Travel for a short distance 2/3 miles at a steadyu speed 40, accelerate slowly enough to get it to kick down one gear and get a cloud of blue smoke, if you accelerate hard eg so it drops a couple of gears then you do not seem to get the smoke.
