Cant start car, cant get out of PARK |
|
Well, this morning opened the car as usual, put the key in.... no start. Then realized it seemed possibly like the immobilizer is still on ?
No engine response whatsoever, hazard lights started flashing.
Car is inside my gate, and we push the car forward towards the gate so that we can open the garage door, anyway, cut a long story short, to open the gate to get the car out we need to reverse the car back.... When the battery has been flat before now, we just take out of Park and roll it back, then open electric gates and jump start off other car...
BUT, in this case I can not get it out of PARK, I assume this confirms that the immobilizer has kicked in ?
Any way of resetting ? Any ideas ? Anything ? Tried unlocking the door and locking again but doesn´t help... Have taken the battery terminals off to try and reset, but no go, not surprised as it seems to be the immobilosor ! ?
Help appreciated, if only to get it out of PARK. Cheers.

Silly question , but have you checked that your brake lights are working. AFAIK the car uses the brake light circuit to check that the brake has been applied , which it wants you to do before allowing you to take it out of park

Not a silly Q at all. Thanks. Going to check this right now... Cheers. Back in 2 mins.
I assumed its locked in park because of the Immobilizer, is this not the case then ? Considering the car engine wont turn over at all, and hazards flash as if its being stolen ! ?

Brake light is working.
It certainly seems to be the Immobiliser though, as the red circular light under the speedo is flashing at me.
Won´t budge out of park, thats for sure.

It seems to think it's in Crash Mode with the hazards on, it does this automatically. Not sure what might have triggered it though. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hard reset or anything ?
Cheers.

SteveNorman wrote:Crash Signal
When the restraints control module outputs any of the
fire signals, it also outputs a hard wired crash signal to
the Engine Control Module (ECM) and changes the
high speed CAN bus output message from 'no crash' to
'crash condition'. The high speed CAN bus message is
used by the Central Junction Box (CJB) and the Fuel
Fired Booster Heater (FFBH).
On receipt of the crash signals:
• The ECM disables the fuel pump.
• Operation of the FFBH is disabled.
• The CJB enters the crash mode and:
• Activates all of the unlock signals of the vehicle
locking system, even if the vehicle is already
unlocked. After 3 seconds, the CJB activates the
unlock signals again, in case a lock button is
pressed during the crash, by flailing limbs for
example.
• Ignores all locking and superlocking inputs until
the crash mode is cancelled, when it returns the
locking system to normal operation.
• Activates all of the courtesy lamps, except for the
approach lamps. The activated courtesy lamps
remain on until they are manually switched off
at the lamp unit, or the CJB crash mode is
cancelled, when they return to normal operation.
• Activates the hazard warning lamps. The hazard
warning lamps remain on until cancelled by
turning the ignition switch from position II to
position I or 0, or until the crash mode is
cancelled.
The crash mode is cancelled by cycling the ignition
switch.

Ah another thing to check is the brake pedla sensor, get your hand underneath at the back of the brake pedal and see if you can wiggles the brake sensor. It won't come out of park if the Brake is not on (or it thing sit's not on) Bodsys Brake Bible

Well that is a very very very very good point, because I have been having problem with the battery.
I was going to put our other car on to jump it, but I can not pull the LR back to get the electric gates open, because its stuck in PARK... LOL
Could the flat battery have caused this Crash Mode then ?
The only issue I normally get is that the Parking Sensors dont work properly when I first start up, then after running for a while, you turn off and back on again, and the sensors are fine.
Battery is not that old, but certainly is flat now and again. I dont drive the car all that often, one once or twice per week... !

this crash mode thing seems to be it. The doors did keep unlocking themselves every few seconds during the last event, and that seems to point to this crash mode.
How do I "cycle the ignition" ?
I have turned on and off quite a few times so far... is there a special sequence ?

No, that would normally do it unless one of the crash sensors is permanently giving a crash signal.
Can you remove the battery & then attach that by jump leads to your other car in the garage? If you then run it for a while, it should put some charge into it (unless of course you have a battery charger) 8)
would also give the Disco time to completely lose any rogue signals. Also touch the positive and negative cables together for 10 seconds on the Disco (obviously with the battery disconnected!) that'll also clear any spurious signals i hope. Bodsys Brake Bible

OK. It was the battery issue.
Got my wifes battery off just to start mine... Started, then was able to get it out of PARK.
Phew. Thanks everyone, and in particular Bodsy who came up with the right stuff....
CRASH mode... jeez.... Tempromental little darlings aren´t they. lol.
I wonder why the battery keeps doing that ? As soon as wifeys car has started it, everything came back to normal. My battery must just need replacing I guess, although it really isnt that old. I replaced it myself once and I only owned the car 2 years, so battery is less than 2 years for sure... ! ! !

If you're doing really short runs, or regularly just starting her up & moving her to open the garage & then shutting down, then I can definately see why your draining the battery.
An investment in a £50 c-tek battery charger/conditioner should solve that problem though Bodsys Brake Bible
