D3 a long term keeper?
OK nice general question. Mine is now 5 and a half years old. I'd always planned to keep this long term, like at least another 4/5 years, maybe longer. Of course none have been around long enough to know but some more mechanically minded friends think they (modern electronic marvels) are a waste of space after about 8 years, and he was speaking of experience with beemers. Interested in your thoughts

I have an 8 year old BMW M5. The electrics are bullet proof. I think the main problem with modern cars with all the amazing technology is that once they are ten years old they are still going to be complicated and difficult to fix, and it mainly involves replacing complete control units rather than repairing. Will certainly be interesting to see what happens over the next few years. The oldest D3's are 6 years old on 54 plates?

Although mine is a 57 I intend to keep for a long time. I'll look at getting a decent warranty when required and go from there.HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

Mines just had her first birthday, and i want her to last till she's 10-15 yrs, (it'll take me that long to save up).
Hoping that regular servicing and a good warranty will get me there.
we shall see,
last d1 was 14 when changed.

Aiming to keep my 2 long term as long as I can get some warranty for the big items. These cars are too much like money pits to risk not having a warranty. Saying that been on Warranty Durect since April and no claims!! WD need to thank Tesco for sorting everything out for them!
Besides have to keep mine, have about 150k miles if tyres to use!

I'm planning on keeping mine for the foreseeable future.....it does everything I need from a 4x4 and also from a family car so I can't see the point in changing it (unless I win the lottery). If all goes well, I think I'll be happy to keep it another 10 years
I've had no real issues - only "niggles". Mine is now nearly 4 years old and I wouldn't think twice about picking up the keys and driving across Europe with nothing more than a "levels and pressures" check before leaving.
It is a money-pit though - I can't stop playing with it

I think that should be 150k miles worth of tyres per D3 From the photos I've seen, even AJS's warehouse looks empty compared to your garage 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

That's not the garage, it's the dining room!!!
10 MTRs so about 75k (one set done about 5k), one set of new ATRs, 40k, one set 18" S type with Scorps 20k and 8 x 17" Contis, 60k, plus 20k on my car & 25k in tread on SWMBO's so in all 240k miles!! Looks like I'll be keeping these for a while as not sure I could sell any of them!

Trouble is as cars get older, warranty costs more and covers less - I just save amount I would have spent on warranty

If I'd have done that for my 2 D3s for their 4th year I estimate I'd be £8k out of pocket!! The 2nd MOT on mine cost £1500 with Tesco picking up the bill. I might be unlucky with both cars but they are LRs, not exactly famous for build quality & reliability, but we still love 'em!

Which is exactly why I will keep the LR warranty going for as long as possible!

Just renewed my LR warranty on my 06 plate D3 - hopefully it will pay for itself over the next 12 months. Only claimed for anti roll bar bushes last year but was told by dealer that it would have been £300 cash. Therefore I figured my new warranty only cost around £300 - seemed a no brainer really......

As they get older they will need more repairs, more work. BUT as they get older, more parts will be available from aftermarket firms, more people will be able to repair and diagnose the electronic modules (look how far it has come already with the forum sponsors and what they can do!) and more people will be able/ willing to work on them generally. So yes, I think they are a long term keeper and will not be "obsolete" in the next decade!2014 D4 XS

Although we have only had our 54 plate 05 for a couple of months the little problems it has are only the same as people are getting on 57 plates etc ie bushes and egr.
These are being sorted by the dealer as the knocks were noted before we bought it and LR warranty for the egr.
Apart from that at nearly 70k it feels and drives just like the 55 plate I had from new back at the time.
We are certainly looking to keep long term, not sure about a warranty after the LR one runs out, I kept our D2 going quite well with only a couple of smallish visits to a garage, granted a different beast but every week there seem to be more jobs being tackled by the 'keen diy ers' on here.

Has anybody else had a letter from Tesco recently that they will not be renewing policies once they expire. I have the fullly comp warrenty, so I don't know if its the insurance comapny Tesco uses or Tesco itself is stopping doing them. Should look into it I suppose...
