Wiipers making noise

I am getting a sort of grating noise when using the wipers. Its not the blades as I changed them last week, its not the springs on the wiper arms (gave them a good blast with WD40) so I conclude that it is something in the linkage mechanism that either needs tightening up or a good blob of grease.

Problem is the plastic cover running accross the bottom of the front screen (the thing the wiper arm spindles poke through) looks quite tricky to remove. Obviously the wiper arms have to come off and the rubber round the back of the engine bay comes off but what else? It looks like the A pillar trims have to come off as well?

Anyone taken theirs off that can advise?

Incidentally I bought the replacement wiper blades from wiperblades.co.uk and went for their own brand flat blades (as recommeded by Auto Express) and I have to say they are loads better than any of the big brand names of blades that I have tried in the past and were significantly less expensive.

I was getting a sort of 'thwack' noise, Valeo blades sorted it out no probs, there's a link in a thread somewhere with part number etc, may not be same issue though.....

Its not the blades. Its a very definate metallic grinding noise.

Do they shudder or just make separate mechanical noise? Ours shudder after a while with buildup of slime from house shaped aerodynamic design, 2 minutes with some auto-glym fast glass cleaner every month or so keeps everything smooth...

No its not a shudder. The glass is spotlessly clean and the blades are new. I can hear a mechanical grinding noise comming from the linkage behind the plastic bulkhead cover at the base of the front screen Sad

I just thought I would close this one off. I took the black rubber seal off from round the back of the engine bay which allowed me to lift up the plastic cover that the wiper arms poke through an inch or so. Then armed with a can of WD40 fitted with a long extension tube blasted all of the linkages and rods to death with WD40.

At last completely silent wipers, complete bliss in the rain yesterday compared to the racket they were making previously Thumbs Up

try autoglym car glass polish does the job for me, removes smears off the windshield and makes smooth surface for blades to work on making much ;less noise

you missed my point - the wipers weren't making a noise on the screen - it was comming from the bulkhead area and was the mechanical linkage that was the problem.
