Drive Train Windup on my 2005 Disco 3

Hi

I have a 05 disco 3 which is winding the transmission up, when manouvering in tight places and then going ahead I get a thudding noise as the transmission unwinds, back tyre outter edges are being scuffed up. (same noises and tyre wear as you get on a Freelander 1 when the Viscous coupling siezes up) any ideas????

The very rare time I also get a thud thud thud noise when turning the wheel and pulling out at a junction, almost like driving with the center diff locked. Thud stops as soon as wheel is straightened. Unfortunately is very hard to recreate so garage has not been able to help me. Sounds similiar to your problem.

Hi Dereck, welcome to DISCO3 Mr. Green

Do you know if your D3 has ever had one of the diffs replaced? Have you owned it from new?

Hi Martin and guys

Thanks for all the postings and to answer Martin, diffs have not been replaced.
Also to answer the other question "how do you get TW on a disco 3" come and have a look at mine, do some tight manouvers on gravel, forward & reverse, and then pull away and it will fire gravel down the road with you, as the rear wheels unwind the transmission.
CV joint going, possible, but would this scrubb the outer edges off the rear tyres?? they are feathered up ie if you look at the side of the tyre each forward edge of a tread block is higher than the back, and I am now experiencing road noise because the tyres have worn like this.
Resulting tyre wear has taken less than 10 days to get like this, approx 200Miles. First set of Wranglers lasted 40K this set is not going to last 12K unless I find what the problem is.
Car has been into LR dealer for them to have a quick look, but they were scratching their heads, and suggested it was booked in for a day.

The centre diff lock works by using a motor to force some clutch plates together. You could try disconnecting the motor wiring plug to see if the problem is mechanical or in the electronics. Not sure if disconnecting the motor will throw up error codes, as the same motor is used for selecting low range, this option won't be available during the test. I take it front and rear tyres are showing signs of feathering?

Hi Guys

D3 went into Landrover today and problem was found. YES you do get TW on a D3 when the back diff has siezed solid. The thuding noise on manouvering was the transmission unwinding, and the siezed diff has caused the tyres to be feathered. This was the only evidence of anything wrong, it still drove OK on all roads including motorway speeds.
Now half to wait for the LR extended warrantie man to view the damage and agree they are paying.

Hi Mark

Great sense of humour!!! Laughing after its road tested it could be "Had both replaced" Rolling with laughter and a new set of boots.
The black RR sport I had a good look at on the fore court, could then be coming home with me Thumbs Up

Make sure they definitely fit TDV6 diffs at both ends....

And shouldn't be a problem under LR extended warranty.

Martin

Thanks for the info, I would assume being a Landrover dealer they would only use genuine LR parts?? As its in their workshop, I can only pray thats what they will fit.

On a better note, nice forum, and a good place to get hands on information when things go wrong, as they offten do!!!!, but obviously not all members are experts!!!!!

They will use genuine parts, but I wouldn't be so sure they'll get the right ones.. Wink

See here for experiences with my D3 with a similar problem: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic36327.html
