Oil leak from silencer

Hi

Just got my Discovery 3 back from a general service, which included an oil change. I noticed that the right rear silencer is laking oil onto my garage floor (did not do this prior to the service). Any idea what is causing this and should I be worried?

Thanks

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the term "silencer". Is that like a seal or something? Smile [/list]

Thanks.

If oil is leaking from the muffler, then that would mean it's getting through the catalytic converter, right?

Make sure nothing is physically damaged...

You sure it's oil, and not water? Mine will drip water once in a while.

If not, I'd keep an eye on it for a few days, see if it burns out.

Definately not water. Noticed the small drip of black liquid on garage floor after the vehicle was standing for a few days. The drip is still there after three days. Had a look under the muffler and noticed its leaking from the muffler seams/welding joints. No sign of the oil though from the exhaust itself - that's clean. Very odd.

The only thing I can think of is they over filled the oil during the service and the excess is being blown out via the exhausts. Strange thing though is the leak is only in the right rear muffler - if my theory is correct - why not both? Im sure that the oil is messing something uo en route from the engine to the muffler - cat included! Despite the leak, the car does not smoke and runs beuatifully.

The smoke could be so minimal you can't see it... Mad

Oh, and the LR3 isn't true dual exhaust, there is a cross over.

But there must be two exhausts - one for each bank of cylinders. Perhaps the oil is being chanelled through one of the pipes only after the cross over. I,m taking it back this week for them to check it out. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks again.

In a true dual exhaust, there would be no crossover... one pipe for one half, other for the other...

But regardless, let us know what they find out! Smile

Just returned from the dealership. You were right - despite being thick, black and sticky, its water not oil. Its winter over here and there is a lot of condensation forming in the exhaust which is mixing with the soot and then finding its way through a leak in the muffler. Fortunately, still under warranty so the muffler will be replaced. Thanks for your help.
