Roof mounted Bike Rack Solution
Not sure this has been done before, sure it has but thought id share none the less
Ive got a removable tow bar rather than fixed and need to carry 3 bike when we are away in the caravan and various other tenting trips with the family. so really needed something roof mounted for most of our trips.
Using standard LR roof bars i could find any thing reasonably priced that would fit around the width of the bars 90mm i think.
Then pull out the rubber track that runs down the length of the LR bars to reveal the Track and fit 3 of these per bike rack, 2 at the front one at the rear http://tinyurl.com/38e8fox you can get them cheaper i got them for £8 from a local bike shop. You need to attach them in the T track as ths supplied brackets are too narrow to go around the girth of the LR bars.
Overall very pleased, ok the racks are entry level and not as sturdy as the Thule ones, which are a small fortune. That said have had no issues with these at all with 3 bikes in situ, nothing moves it all feels very solid indeed.
thanks

I have 3 Thule ones mounted on the Front runner.
I just drilled out the holes to accept an M8 bolt, then put a couple of spacers washers.
3 bolts on each one solid as a rock.
A little more expensive, but at least they should stay put when speeding.

I think I saw a post for a company called maxxraxx that allowed towbar mounted rack and towing at the same time.
Not much use to you now as you seem to have sorted for a much lower price but if anyone else is looking.

with the tow bar mounted ones you need a fixed flange towbar if you want to tow also as it mounts behind the tow ball.
hear what you are saying re thule quality they are much much more solid, but at around £80 each I just couldnt justify it having just bought a new bike and the wife a new bike and my son a new bike and my daughter a second hand bike(poor love)

This rack is designed for use with a detachable or fixed SwanNeck tow bar.

thanks, from reading their info it looks as though you also need a further adapter that isnt yet available for an alko hitch head stabiliser that our caravan has, as do most these days, ill stick with the roof system until of course i end up scratching the hell out of the sides of the car
Alko stabiliser one is not yet available but is under development I was toldPot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

I don't have anything with an Alko coupling at present, but you can fit a "clean" ball in place of the pintle.
