Road Angel Signal
Bought a Road Angel for Accident Black Spot identification , but struggled to get a signal. Assumed it was the heating elements as per the intstructions booklet and so bought the extension antenna. This is down by the right hand side of the screen where it's wire-free.
It does get a satellite lock quicker than before (centre mounted above centre speaker), but can still take upto 10 mins. For those of you who have one fitted is this typical? I have tried leaving it sitting on the roof of the car (not whilst driving... I know you lot!!) and still seems to take while.
Once it's got a lock, all seems fine, but 10 mins? Faulty unit (return)? Air quality, space Debris in the way? Any thoughts?

My Satnav (aftermarket) does this occassionally if I havent used it for a while. Its like its re-establishing where all the GPS sats are. I've got the arial in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Works fine once GPS signals have been collected.

Mine RA is fine in the D3, but myself & some friends had problems with earlier models of the RA2. Road Angel swapped them for us with no aggro.

Thanks for the comments; I'll take it back and push for a swap... think it might be an iffy unit then. It's a Road Angel Plus (think "plus" just means bigger battery), so should be a recent model.
Sods law, I'll get caught speeding on the way to return it. D3 HSE V8...

i have an original Road Angel (serial DB9 connector) mounted on my dash with no external aerial. Had it for 3 years now.
It worked fine for a 1 yr or so and then stopped receiving signals correctly. RoadAngel people said it needed a stronger receiver which they upgraded for free as I had maintained a subscription for the updates. All is fine now.
Only time i see it having an issue is extreme cloud cover, but that is normal for anything GPS based.2009 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE

Not with the more modern GPS chipsets - I can even get a very good signal and lock indoors with the new Sirf III chipsets.

I have a Talex GPS unit. In my VW van, it got the signal within about 10 seconds. In the D3, even with it mounted on a clear bit of glass, it takes about 4 minutes.Matt

I have MIO 169 (PDA with built in GPS) for navigation, mounted in the hole where the factory fitted satnav would be, it takes 1-2 min to take up the sattelites. I have also heated windscreen. Regards, ANLR D3 S Black, Auto TDV6

I have a Snooper located bottom right corner of the screen. It takes about 30 seconds to "lock on". When I first turned it on from new a "cold start" it took about 10 minutes. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
I have the £200 unit from Makro with the flip up antenna and i get a lock on in 60 to 80 secs and I have had 7 to 10 sats showing on it with it mounted in the space left by the factory fitted sat nav.
I also have a front heated screen and have no problems at all.
I have just installed TT6 on it now and thats working great ...
