High risk of some plonker in a BMW ignoring the fact that there's 2.5 tons of Land Rover to the right of him doing 70mph on the A3 whilst he's talking on the phone and decides he's sat 2ft from the back bumper of the bloke in the middle lane for long enough and it's time to drift over into the outside lane. Happened about 20 minutes ago
He won't do it again (what am I saying, of course he will!), he may need clean underware! Most impressive was the bloke travelling at a safe distance in the Range Rover behind me who saw what happened and managed to time it perfectly so when BMW man went for his second 'drift' he suddenly found another large lump of Solihul metal in the way
I'm sure there are some sensible BMW drivers out there unfortunately none of them live around here.
Don't get me started on the Merc drivers... The End

Be carefull. Make sure you ask if you are covered for going off-road. I tried Direct line and esure and neither would give any cover as soon as I left the road, not even green lanes. In the end I went with Land Rovers own.

Perhaps only in the eyes of insurance companies .All i am saying is if you want to use your D3 anywhere off road don't assume you are covered, phone and ask the question!

Si, don't get me started on the Beemer boys. They are a cult of their own Good job the car drives for most of them otherwise they wouldn't get anywhere other than hospital. Careful, because we are going to get slated by the Beemer owners on the site now. I don't care, I can take it, I'm a Jimny owner.

Insurance in the UK is a grey area with 4x4's. That is why I am with NFU. They at least know the vehicles is going to tow, go offroad, work hard, be roughly treated and still go on a motorway. The BMW and Merc ML rarely go off road and the D3 could easily be underwritten in that format with some companies.
As suggested above, check you policy very carefully indeed.

Go to NFU, they say get on with it. Will pay for damage apparently if it is in the lawful persuit of business, like getting the sheep in off the hills etc .

Just phoned Direct line and they confirmed that they definatly DO NOT cover cars for driving off road ( defined as leaving tarmac by the girl I spoke to). . When I first asked if you would be covered "off road" the girl thought I ment parking in my driveway!! Nightfox and Nickhearne,( and anyone else) I urge you to double check and get it in writing before taking up to £42,000 worth of car off road. I know this appears pedantic and I do not wish to lecture anybody, but I speak from experience when I say don't just take the word of somone in the call center!!

Raymond, you are so correct. The youngsters in the call centres probably don't even know what a D3 is, let alone what it can do. The Underwriters didn't know either when the D3 came out initially. They thought it was a 110 or similar. My insurance was arranged through the underwriter direct after he spoke to LR and ascertained that it was a LR that would off road and probably be damaged in doing so. I am insured for business, with cover for 3 trailers on or off road and EU cover thrown in.
Trailers covered even behind other vehicles by the way.
It is so easy for a call centre to say yes if you do not ask the right questions. It is only when a claim is made the tears start.

Hi
My father tried Insurance for his X5 Diesel with Direct line and then NFU and guess what? Exactly the same to the penny!
NFU Agent then admitted they go through Direct line for car insurance.
