Windscreen Replacement

My windscreen is being replaced next week (stone strike on the motorway) by Autoglass at the behest of NFU the insurer.

Are there any points to watch for? It's being done in my garage so I can be on hand to watch without hovering.

Any suggestion gratefully received. Thumbs Up

I'll be watching this thread with interest, I'm about due a new screen in mine, just waiting for a crack to grow big enough.

It's been replaced before and it's definitely not an OEM one, some of the side trim clips were missing and quite a large number of the heater wires appear to be broken - looks like I'm behind bars when I need to demist quickly.

I just hope the next one is fitted better and lasts longer.

Autoglass bokked to replace mine later this month - can't believe the 2 1/2 week wait for it though.
On their ads they harp on about safety and the lack of it driving with a cracked screen, and when you go to book they say it's quite safe..... As if I can't make my own mind up about that one!

On the basis of info on this thread and the other one started by NeilD, I have cancelled Autoglass and arranged for it to be fitted at my Land Rover Dealer with a fitting company of their choice. It will cost another £20 on my excess but for that I get a Land Rover supervised fitting, I'm paying the Dealer, not the fitter so any come back is with the Dealer. Much easier and peace of mind. Thanks fellahs Thumbs Up

When I cancelled the Autoglass fitting, I got a lecture on the pros and cons of the difference in the LR stamped product and the Autoglass replacement. I was told that there is no difference apart from the LR badge in the corner. I just listened and didn't relate the anecdotal evidence of poor fitting & etc that has been experienced by Forum members. The bloke was quite irate that I had the temerity to cancel so I think that they've had a few more cancellations than mine.

Make sure the clips get cahnged on the tims down the posts next to the windscreen. My D4 screen was damaged on the PDI test drive and replaced at the garage supplying the car a week after I took delivery due to them having to get the scren in. The screen was replaced (by an independant fitter) but the clips on the trims were not, both trims came unclipped during the first drive. Clips all replaced now and no other issues.

Had MrsR's screen replaced recently: long wait on booking was ascribed to
- snow causing missed appointments, so backlog to catch up
- snow/frost causing broken roads causing lots of extra work
- huge advertising campaign at the same time(!)

New screen looks like a good job so far

Had the screen done at Taunton Land Rover by their regular fitter (Phoenix Windscreens). At least that way - he was familiar with the type and it was done under LR supervision. They used new clips - I found the old ones on the deck. Seems okay - we've had some heavy rain and so far no puddles in the footwells Laughing . It cost me £70 in excess as opposed to £50 if I'd done it through NFU and Autoglass. £20 for peace of mind was worth it. Thumbs Up

Retail for a new screen is apparently around £300 plus VAT.

Must admit was quite impressed with Autoglass when they did mine, was a little apprehensive regarding some of the comments from other members but they did a good clean job and the screen was an original with the LR logo on it as well.
Still didn't save me from getting a chip 24h after the replacement though, got that repaired at AG as well.

My wiper blades activated today on a near dry screen (was using the water jets to clean) and went into crossover mode snapping the plastic mechanism off the drivers side blade. Closer examination revealed that when the wiper arms were refitted after the windscreen replacement they weren't tightened enough to locate properly on the splined drive shafts.

Result: the aluminium splines on the wiper arms are now smooth bore and need replacement and I need a new Valeo wiper.

It's the simple things that get you down innit!. Big Cry Just one more thing to check when having a windscreen replaced. And to think people get paid to NOT do this. Evil or Very Mad

£20 well spent in that it will go back to LR for repair at their cost instead of me having to chase the windscreen fitting company.

Had mine replaced on D3 by Autoglass acouple of years ago at my place of work and was a disasster Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad . The side trims were not refitted properly and ended up with loads of wind noise. The new screen that was fitted was not a genuine landrover screen so the dark surround was revealling the wiring loom at the side. When questioned they said that the fixings sometimes get damaged on the side trim when they remove them, and they could not guarantee a perfect screen match unless they fitted a genuine landrover screen. To cut a long story short, after complaining to my insurance cmpany i was given a hire car whilst my car went into their workshop in Liverpool and a new genuine landrover screen was fitted along with new trims Thumbs Up Smile .

They say this often... load of rubbish. The cheap Chinese copy glass they usually fit is smaller (the black surround is thicker), the heating elements are thicker (and quite distracting in sun) and the bright yellow ribbon cables don't conceal behind the A-pillars properly. What makes it worse is that they sometimes lie about what glass they are going to fit.
