Hello everyone,
Every time I read about winching I hear about having to put something on the tow rope once this one is taut... A pullover for instance or some piece of cloth...
I know that I have to do it, but I don't know the why ?
So, can someone explain ? Please ??
Thank you in advance... Georgia On My Mind...

2 reasons:
1. To show where the cable is. Sounds simple, but cable isn't always highly visible and stops others tripping over it / getting too close
2. (the main reason) to absorb as much of the cable's potential energy as possible if it snaps. Without a blanket or other 'damper', a snapped cable will whip with huge force, and could easily cause fatal damage to bodies and vehicles. Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

Thanks for the quick answer !
I thought, but maybe I am mistaken, that the reason was also to help deflect the direction of the "snapped cable" downward... Is that right ?
Thanks... Georgia On My Mind...

The easiest thing is to use plasma rope rather than wire on your winch. If the plasma breaks it simply drops to the ground and doesn't whip around dangerously. I have used plasma on front winch for 3 years now and never broken it. Personally I think winch blankets (or sails) can be quite dangerous if the winch is being used in a competitive situation (ie at great speed) as they can need manual intervention whilst winching to keep them out of the winch itself. That task can require the "co-pilot" (ie non driving assistant) to stay near the winch, stand in front of the vehicle whilst winching and put their hands near the winch. None of that should happen in practice, but it often does where a winch blanket is in use Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Well, my problem is that I have been supplied with an 8,4T vehicle with a winch only rated up to 3,5T...
And no hope of changing the rope...
Thus, we are simply trying to find easy solutions... Competition is definitly NOT the issue !
But I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the day I'll have my own winch... Georgia On My Mind...

Nope...
The "Official Policy" is that "you have to drive the vehicle to help the winch"...
Yeah right...

I have synthetic rope on my winch. Whilst, i have never broken it, I have been told by someone who competes with it that it will whip around when broken. It is just that it won't take your leg off like wire rope, it will only leave a bruise. Have a nice day!
