Should I change the oil of the automatic gearbox, and when?
Hello,
I'm from Bulgaria.
Should I change the oil of the automatic gearbox, and when?
My Disco3 (2,7TDV6 AUTOMATIC, 2005) is 55 000 miles.
Regards from Bulgaria,

I think it's supposed to be changed every 150,000 miles or something like that.
If you have problems with the auto gearbox (juddering, fluctuating revs, slipping, surging etc), then you should just get it changed immediately.
Some people have said that if you don't have problems, then you shouldn't touch it
To be honest I would personally try and get it changed every 3 years....it is very easy to do yourself and if you do a lot of towing it makes sense.

Are you using the D3 for towing ? This can affect the "life" of an auto.
If in doubt - change it - it's only the cost of a bit of oil and labour....and then you have peace of mind re your auto.
I'm having mine done at 120,000 kms
Good luck cicovesko.

Hi,
at 85000 miles I had Transmission fault warnings on the dash and complete power Loss on my 06 disco 3.
One month out of Warranty and LR did not want to know.
When checked ,the transmision oil was burned and had caused the problems.
According to LR the oil does not need to be changed in the Auto box until 150,ooo miles unless under certain circumstances.
Our LR was not used regularly off road in Arduouos conditions but was regularly driven hard at Motorway cruising speeds, sometimes for 6-7 hours at a time and it appears that this constant high speed is classed as one of those certain circumstances when the oil needs to be changed.
i checked with the gearbox manufacture via the internet and they recommended 60,000 - 80,000 miles.!! for auto g/box oil changes.
Fortunately the very expensive new gearbox oil
(VERY EXPENSIVE AND ONLY AVAILABLE FROM LR DEAL:ERS APPARATLY) solved the problem in our disco but according to our independant mechanic, bits can get into the censors within the gearbox and cause lots of problems and even the possibility of requiring a new Box!!
I now intend to change the oil at 50,000 mile intervals
I hope this helps

LR quote 150k miles but I had mine megaflushed at 70k miles. The difference is amazing and well worth the money.

"Sealed for Life" according to LR.
Translate this as "Sealed for the life of the warranty"
As The G Man said:"i checked with the gearbox manufacture via the internet and they recommended 60,000 - 80,000 miles.!! for auto g/box oil changes."“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I had mine MegaFlushed at 80'000 M and as mzplcg says, the difference really is amazing.
It's a much better drive now, no more juddering or clunky gear changes.
I for one will be ignoring LR's advice and getting it done every 50 - 60 K, I reckon it's worth the cost to prolong the life of the gearbox.Clive

LR will sometimes state that all you need to do is a so called 'double flush'
Using LR transmission fluid this will cost around £250+
Mega flush (search on google) will pump through twice as much fluid and clean out all the crud for around £175 and the difference is amazing
The choice is yours Never get mad - get even !!

I did a double flush of mine a couple of months ago using Motul Multi ATF (meets the M1374.5 spec apparently). I also wanted to change the filter, but looking into it, it is too big a job to do at home with a platform etc.
Anyway, it worked a treat, but after around 5-6 days it started slipping again (or surging in 3rd and 4th gears).....after about 3 weeks it was the same as before the double flush.
Last week I dropped it into a local LR workshop and asked them to double flush with the correct LR ATF oil and change the filter for the one that I had bought.
It's been one week now and I've done quite a lot of kms since then.....the difference is amazing....it doesn't seem to slip/surge at all and the changes are much smoother.
I have a feeling that it needed the filter change, but it also means that I cannot confirm that the Motul Multi ATF is suitable as a replacement (1/3rd of the price of LR ATF).
Why LR don't include this in the service schedule every 3 years) is a mystery - it's patently obvious that the oil simply doesn't last what they say it should (although it does help get their average service costs down in the rankings ).
I would recommend changing it every 3 years whether you think it needs it or not.....if you notice problems, then it's probably worth getting the filter changed as well
From everything I've read, the mega-flush seems the cheapest, most effective and easier way of doing it - I just can't find anyone over here that does it.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG
