When changing me wheels, I noticed this item on the front suspension under each wheel arch:
It's a white plastic arm, connected to a rod on the right. Below is a black electrical connection. It looks like the little servo motors used on remote control models. It all seems rather fragile to be exposed to the elements (and sticks etc) under the wheel arch.
Does anyone know what this does? I couldn't work it out. Maybe it measures the height of the wheel lift for the off-road display.Matt

It's the height sensor. Almost identical to the one used on the Disco2 with rear air suspension. Also used on my M3 (but probably more for stability control).
On the D2 you can actually bend the little plastic arm a bit (with the engine running) and the suspension will move up and down (be careful where your arms are..)

the sensor is actually quite well tucked in, worst i've seen is some grass arould the arm. I've not seen or heard of any getting damaged on the D3 other than water ingress to the connector in a couple of cases traced back to a missing or poorly fitted seal

Seems like it could get damaged easily.

Hmmmm, its looking very clean under there, too....
Pictures were taken on the Friday before the weekend.
I cleaned the D3 yesterday. Due to the amount of sand and caked on mud, I got the pressure washer out and cleaned it on the road, so the sand stayed off my drive. There was loads of it. My road is now yellow.
Maybe someone reported me for using a hosepipe. It took me about an hour!
Also had to clean the interior. Everything was covered with a fine yellow dust.Matt
Wash it ??? Booked mine in for the"enhancement" and they said that they would wash the underneath to get the oil off from my diff failure . I'm hoping that all the sand etc from Rockingham will be removed at the same time !Pot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

Just a small addition: this sensor is also used on cars with Xenon headlights where it is doing the headlight levelling job (measuring chassis longitudinal tilt). In this case you'll find only two of these, either on the left or the right front and read suspension arms. When the guys forgot to re-sonnect the rear one after some electrical job my Boxster gave me an "automatic headlight adjustment error" message...TDV6 HSE Java Black, auto, difflock, fridge, winter, 7-seater, PDC, privacy, AHL, sunroof - 3rd row fixed

HELLO!!!!
Anyone here get the same idea I just did??? If one were to change the lenght of the arm, could you get the D3 to sit higher(1") without using extended mode?

sure.... if you want to push the vehicle beyond its designed on - road stability, DSC, ABS, TC and a lot of other sub - systems take information from the ride height sensors, if you want to 'fool' those systems, possibly when you need them the most.... well, you might make the Darwin awards
