Dual Battery

Hi,
I have a NL system in my D3 with a 70ah 2nd battery.As with most duel systems it is not used for long periods,and when used is abused.What is best under these circumstances,to disconnect the negative after the battery is fully charged or to just leave it to the NL to manage?Any other suggestions to help the battery last longer?On all my other vehicles I just left every thing to the split charge,but it was no fancy systems with a lower charging rate,without any problems.

Leave it to do it's thing . Just make sure that you never leave the battery in a discharged state for too long - shouldn't happen if you drive the car all the time though

If you leave the NL to manage it, it will give it a small top-up charge every time you drive for more than 3 minutes. This is probably good for the battery.

Was thinking about the 2nd battery just yesterday, it's sitting there in a sometimes very hot engine compartment. A.F.A.I.K. batteries need constant mild temperatures to last long. I would think putting the 2nd battery inside the vehicle might be a better option, or not? I also think that a 2nd battery in the engine compartment should last only around 2-3 years because of the high temps it will be operating in. Thoughts/ comments on this? White MY2011 SDV6 HSE

Batteries have been "living" quite happily inside engine compartments for years - so IMHO I do not think itis a problem. I owned a VW Caravelle with battery underneath passenger seat and all Defenders have the batteries underneath passenger seat and I do not believe that they "live longer".

Batteries inside vehicles add a lot of risk in the event of an accident and should not be recommended for every day vehicle usage.

I reckon the best quote for batteries is "use it or lose it". Batteries perform at its best when it is used and topped up on a regular basis.

I have recently invested in a Optima for the 2nd battery in my D3 and only time will tell if this investment will last longer than the "normal 3-4 yeas" for a deep cycle battery Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor

if this was the case why would 99% of most vehicles have a cranking battery located under the bonnet? It doesn't get any hotter under a D3 bonnet than it would if you had a battery mounted inside the cabin when parked outside in the miday sun. Club Exped trailer
