We deal in vintage cars and use Millers steering box oil, which is wonderful stuff. It looks like golden syrup, but really works well in curing sticky or stiff steering. Hopefully their other products are as good.

The Oilman cannot get the Castrol Oil, but stocks the Millers equivalent which meets the LR Spec and will therefor enot invalidate the Warranty:
Millers Oils XF Longlife C1 5w-30 £10.41 per litre or 5l for £40.67 and of course with members discount from OPIES it is cheaper still.

Just bought some direct on oilman's website.
Stealer wanted £16 a litre can, oilman £9.37 a litre can. Recommend to all D4 owners as I couldn't find the grade anywhere else. THanks again Patrick for the steer.

Don't forget the most important thing you put into your vehicle is its lubricants, the issue of a couple of quid/dollars to buy a cheaper equivalent belies belief. We spend an inordinate amount of money on a vehicle and then bicker about a couple of dollars where its most important.
Rule 1. buy the best lubricant you can !
Rule 2. buy the best lubricant you can !!
Why buy a product that "meets" specs when there are products available that "exceed" specs. a product that meets specs will protect your engine under normal driving circumstances. Under duress this product is more likely to fail and leave your engine wanting, even in a minor instance some damage, however slight, will occur, the vehicle will start to use a little oil and this damage can very rarely be repaired. A better engine oil (the best is synthetic) will continue to protect under duress, the engine will run cleaner, perform better and you will achieve better fuel economy, reduced downtime and under a oil watch program (outside of warranty of course) reduce your oil drainage requirements even further, (more cost initially, end result:- better protection and potentially more money in your pocket in the long run)
I work for a lubricant company, which will remain unnamed as I don't want to be seen advertising, but please guys, buy the best you can get it is one of the most important decisions you can make for your vehicle. Discovery 4 the greatest 4wd on the planet. LandRover the worst customer service imaginable. Do you have to put up with one to experience the other? Apparently yes!!!!

Agree with that modern vehicles have special needs.
However the LR dealer in Darwin (also Mitubishi dealer) was putting the wrong oil in D3s when servicing. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

By the way, D4 is designed with 15000 mile oil change interval. Why would any one needs to top it off during a 1000 or even a 5000 mile road trip????
I thought oil topping off between the oil change interval is for older cars and trucks burning or leaking oil badly...

The official oil is Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow 5W30 (Low soot). There's some scary stories hovering around at the moment about Land Rover rejecting warranty claims on vehicles that don't have this oil put in! It's pretty cheap at £11 or so per litre too

my D4 has used about 1 litre in the first 2500 miles, but for the last 3000 miles its not used any. So a little has been absorbed during the first few miles. Duncan

The 3.0 SDV6 engine oil specification is stated as SAE 5W-30, WSS-MC2934-B. Any oil that meets that spec if fine to use regardless of manufacturer.
My handbook states that 'Land Rover recommend Castrol products' which is not an instruction so for top ups between services, I'm happy with the Millers XF Longlife C1 which arrived today from the Oilman, very quick delivery
(but Aberdeen in the Highlands for carriage charges??? Not last time I looked! )

This thread is a bit old but I just wanted to check I'm headed in the right direction. As my car is new and not yet "bedded in" I believe I can expect some oil loss early on and have been trying to find some of the LR recommended Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow 5W30 C1, with no success.
Either of these from Opie should be OK though ?
