Fuel Tank Capacity

Both of the fill ups in my TDV6 D3 have been about 81 ltrs within a few miles of the fuel warning light going on, trip saying 50ish miles range left. The manual, internet & brochure says tank capacity of 82.3 ltrs. Have I been sailing too close to the wind (near dry), if so is there a problem with the trip computer, or has LR given me a larger tank??

Any thoughts??

best not fret and fill her up when she gets to qtr full. That way you'll never run out and be stranded Smile

The light will come on, and the miles remaining will deteriorate fast. 100 miles left can be down to zero in 20 miles. I fill up at 1/4 tank to be safe, although I did run for 30mmiles with the trip on zero miles left, and got 83 litres in at the fill up! Now that was cutting it fine.

Tx, will be filling up at 1/4 tank, do not want to risk running out.

I close my eyes when filling up. Seems to help not seeing the ££££ move at great speed !

My last diesel receipt shows that I put 84.18 litres into the tank, so it does have more capacity than LR suggest. It was pretty empty at that stage (the range was down to about 30 kms, I think). I know that that is a little nerve-racking but I assume, perhaps wrongly, that the guages show rather on the safe side. After the refill the range was over 900 kms for a little while.

I guess the quoted tank capacity doesn't take account of the filler pipes and hose connections.

I was always told not to run a diesel almost dry- as the sludgy stuff in the bottom of the tank would then be used and clog fuel filters etc.

Was this wrong?

As Clarkson once said, the only sport / adrenaline we can have on the roads these days is playing fuel roulette, seeing how low we can get the tank (without running dry) before losing our nerve and re-filling

No, I also know about the sludge story and prefer not to run my tank so empty. However, I also prefer to fill up at my local filling station, which is cheaper then when commuting on the autobahn. On my normal schedule I fill the tank after 4 days' commuting, without running it too empty. However, if I do any extra miles, it can run rather low.

I reckon on a maximal run of about 850 kms (around 530 miles) on a tank of diesel. What do others allow for?

Depresses me filling it right up and paying £70 a shot!

I tend to only fill it in 40 litre lumps at the point the light comes on.

My mileage doesn't need it to be filled any more than that 8)

I'm a roullette addict Smile
Regularly put in 85ltr, with range 0 remaining.
Worst distance achieved per tankfull approx 520miles
Best achieved yet... 602 miles ... including the car going in for 30k service halfway through Very Happy

Just to correct my misconceptions .... surely the fuel is always drawn from the bottom of the tank Question Question Question

mmm... it costs the same per mile / ltr to fill it up to the top and you would not have to stop and fill so regularly. Wink
